Humor requires context for accurate interpretation.  "Laughing all the way to the bank" is not new, though it used to be "Crying all the way to the bank."  I first heard 'Crying' said about Liberace when he was being made fun of for his [less than macho] mannerisms, while mid to older age ladies were swooning over him.   As we all know Liberace made a lot of money.  In fact, I'm thinking he said it himself, about himself, when asked in an interview.  But alas, I lack the facts needed to authenticate that.  I'm gonna check it out!
