Turdiffs--the bigly solution to everything

I respectfully disagree with your take on this.  This can't and won't happen.  Any President, elected, or appointed, can only serve up to 10 years total, provided they serve just two years for a President that has died and then are elected and reelected.   There is no way the Supreme Court or the States will allow this to happen.   You would have to change the Constitution and that ain't easy.

Sorry, but the scenarios I related are indeed possible. I agree they're unlikely.

So according to my senario above, we are on the same page.  Right, Tom?  If Trump passed away tomorrow, Vance would finish up this term, which is more than two years, and could be elected just once.

Correct

Tom, there is no language in the Constitution that limits the total time served to ten years.

How about this from the 12th Amendment?

But no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States.

In regards to Trump....since he has served, should he make it to '29, his two terms, he isn't eligible to be VP.  So he can only serve 8 years.

Now should Trump pass away in January 2027, Vance would be President for the remaining two years, and under the 22nd Amendment, if he doesn't serve MORE than two years, he could be elected President and then reelected after that for a total of 10 years.   If Trump dies in late 2025, Vance would finish out the term as President, the last three years, and would then only be eligible to be elected once for a total of 7 years.

I'm not sure why this is so hard to understand?

Even after that ten years of service, a former President can assume the office in at least two ways.

He can be appointed--NOT ELECTED--to the office of Vice President and then succeed.

He can be chosen Speaker and then succeed.

What everyone's missing is that the Constitution does NOT place a limit on total years of service, ten years or otherwise.
