UnitedHealthCare CEO Gets His Policy Cancled

I feel bad for his family but not for him. He has killed tens of thousands of people with his denial coverage decisions.

Seems like somebody wanted payback.

The bullet casings found at the scene have words on them deny, defend and depose.  Definitely looking like a denial of coverage was the motivation.

Whether you like Obamacare or not, I like and dislike parts of it, I always thought it was funny how people were so concerned about "the government" making your healthcare decisions for them. Yet, they're fine with a for-profit company doing just that and it's usually not a free market situation. Most people have whatever insurance company the company they work for decides to use. If you don't like UnitedHealthcare's 32% decline rate, and the company you work for chose them to offer health insurance, you're stuck with them.

Here's an article on some of the online reactions to his death.

When a medical insurance CEO was gunned down in the street, some people celebrated his death. What does this tell us about American healthcare?

Medicare's nation wide approval ratings have always been higher than any private insurer.

and you won't find a single person in Canada who says they would like to swap out there healthcare system for ours.

private health insurance is probably the biggest problem with life in the United States

I'm not an expert on this but, I did see a news program a while back about the healthcare system in France. Everyone gets coverage, but they also have private insurance companies that you can buy additional coverage from. It seems like a good approach, that could be used if designed properly.

"and you won't find a single person in Canada who says they would like to swap out there healthcare system for ours."

I'm not so sure about that statement, as I've heard from friends in Canada that they'll go to the USA and Mexico for treatment since they can have long waiting periods. Of course this was 10 years ago, so perhaps they've improved their system.

And there are these stories out of Canada, such as a paralympian who needed a wheelchair lift was offered Medical Assistance In Dying (Euthanasia) instead of the expensive lift.  Shocking.  I guess if healthcare is government controlled they may in the future decide exactly the treatment you'll get; which if it costs too much, perhaps they'll just erase you from the books, so to say.

Testifying in French, she said she has been fighting for a home wheelchair ramp for five years and expressed her concerns about the assisted dying offer in a recent letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Apparenty United didn't even use real people to look at claims. They used an AI that had a 90% error rate.  United considered that a feature not a bug.

The perversity of it means if you are wrongfully denied there is an incredibly long process, ERISA, you have to go through to get your treatment if it was through an employer.

The insurance industry was able to rig the game so to speak with ERISA.

1.  If the company wrongfully denied you, your only remedy is a Federal lawsuit using the process laid out in the ERISA act.

You cannot file a state court lawsuit which makes this litigation rather expensive.

2.  You don't get a jury trial. You get a bench trial. The Insurance industry didn't want plaintiffs to be able to appeal to people's sense of common decency.

3. You don't get pain and suffering or anything like that if you win. Your sole remedy is the treatment you were denied.

The catch is by the time this process plays out most of time the patient is dead or the patient is too far gone for the treatment to work.

Guess what? If the treatment is no longer necessary or will no longer be effective, the insurance company doesn't have to pay even if the reason they denied your claim was fraudulent.

What folks in the insurance industry mean by deny, defend and delay is:

Deny - Deny the claim even if the policy obligates you to pay it.

Defend - Once a complaint is filed, mount a full on defense which drives the cost of the case up for the paitent to discourage them from going forward.

Delay - Delay as long as you can filing every motion you can because time is on your side even if you are at fault.

The insurance industry has legally killed millions of Americans and made many millions more needlessly suffer using this scheme.

Honestly, I am suprised this hasn't happened before.

and you won't find a single person in Canada who says they would like to swap out there healthcare system for ours.

Actually it is a lot of people.

From IPSOS

Montreal, QC, April 11th, 2024 — An Ipsos survey for the Montreal Economic Institute is showing that Canadians’ opinions about their provincial healthcare systems have not improved in 2024 compared to last year. As in 2023, we find that less than half (48%) of Canadians are satisfied with their provincial healthcare system, with only 8% saying they are very satisfied

Similar to the last two years, half of Canadians (52%) would like increased access to healthcare provided by independent health entrepreneurs

More than three-quarters of Canadians (78%) believe their provincial healthcare system is too bureaucratic, a steady increase since 2020

While Medicare is popular there are several layers to the program that pile up the costs.  The Part B premium is $185 per month per person plus a $257 deductable.

Since Part B doesn't pay 100% of the costs one must buy an Advantage policy (costs vary).  Since the availability of care facilities is limited with Advantage many people instead buy a Supplement policy G.which costs $159 person per month.

And since none of the above covers nursing home care one must buy a nursing home policy which can cost $200 per month.

The insurance industry has legally killed millions of Americans and made many millions more needlessly suffer using this scheme.

Proof?

Meanwhile from the UK Telegraph

Aug 31, 2023 · More than 120,000 people died while on waiting lists last year, according to an analysis of health service data.

From the BBC

Patients are facing delays stuck on hidden waiting lists that do not show up in the official figures in England, a BBC News investigation reveals. The published waiting list stands at 7.6 million - but the true scale of the backlog is thought to be much higher.

This is because patients needing ongoing care are not automatically included in those figures - even if they face major delays.

The health and care system in England is gridlocked with patients at risk because they cannot access the support they need, regulators say. The Care Quality Commission's annual report warned the problem was creating long waits for ambulances and in A&E.
