Here is an article from Financial Times indicating that Trump proposed a 60% tariff on all goods imported from China plus the 100% tariff on Chinese EVs coming through Mexico. He also stated that he would impose a 100% tariff on all goods from countries that moved away from using the dollar for trade. In addition, he has proposed a 10%-20% tariff on all goods imported from other countries. Like my fellow Coloradan Max, I have no problem with targeted tariffs when countries are dumping goods into this country. I'm not for blanket tariffs on all imported goods. To remind DM again, I am still a registered Republican and have been since the first time I registered as an 18 year old. I haven't voted for a major party candidate for president since 2000 and don't plan to this time. I concentrate down ballot. https://www.ft.com/content/ac708b43-64ae-45b8-b60d-997e7904086a
Robert, what's wrong with "dumping"? If the store across the street is "dumping" food, I'll go stock up. If my local Toyota dealer is "dumping" cars, I'll buy one. Or three. Similarly, if China's "dumping" steel--or EVs--or fortune cookies--we should buy all we can.
The old-fashioned "protectionist" thinking is that we should "protect" our inefficient industries by forcing American consumers to buy their products instead of better/cheaper equivalent imported products. That's Cold War-era thinking, and obsolete.
It's all one big market now, and we should treat it as such. I strongly believe in the Law of Comparative Advantage, which says that economic benefit is maximized when each trading partner (countries, in this case) produces what it does best and rather than producing other goods, uses the trade surplus from that "best" good to purchase/trade for those other goods.
Of course, the argument against that has always been, "But what if they do this that the other, and we can't get their kumquats any more? We'll be sorry that we didn't keep our kumquat industry!" The answer to that is to have multiple trading partners so that if a relationship goes south, there are alternatives. The Republican/MAGA/Trump "solution" is to produce EVERYTHING we need here, which is an impossible pipe dream.
Do you really want to pay the government a 10-20% sales tax on EVERY imported good that you buy? Just so our big corporations can stifle foreign competition and keep on making those record profits?

Many people agreed with Trump that he won the 2020 election. That does not "vindicate" his incitement of a rebellion against the government.
Got it? No? Oh, well. You're a fucking moron.
Oh, and Trump DID propose a blanket 100% tariff on imported Chinese goods. He's also proposed a 60% tariff, a total trade ban on China, and a 100% tariff on nations that don't transact in dollars--WHICH WOULD INCLUDE CHINA.
Moron!

This was done to protect the domestic auto industry. And I note there is one or more threads here where I expressed my displeasure with it. The domestic auto industry is only building gentrified EVs. That is why they aren't selling. The market for 80k+ EVs isn't large. They are essentially toy cars for the upper middle class and the wealthy. It would make sense if the domestic auto industry had a desire like BYD to sell 15k cars but they don't even want to be in that market and have no plans to enter that market.
Let's keep in mind that Trump's good friend "Leon" Musk pushed for this. He bitched and moaned a poor capitalist like him couldn't compete with the communist Chinese in terms of price or quality. You are getting inferior EV cars in every way thanks to Leon. Right now BYD could sell its 15k compact with 100% tariff and still come in a little cheaper than Leon's cheapest model with a 10-year-old dated design but anybody that buys one would be paying a 15k tax that would be used to subsidize Leon's inferior products.
Trump wants to do this for everything. Can you imagine the look on those poor MAGA chumps' faces when they walk into their local Walmart and see that the prices of everything in the store have gone up 10% to 60%. overnight?

He's made several different proposals, with several different numbers/percentages, usually during interviews or in his rally speeches. You can go rummage around Facebook for videos of those if you're interested.
It's not "what I claim." It's what he said. Robert provided a link to some info on ONE of Trump's sets of proposals. They've varied quite a bit, but punitive tariffs on China--enough to stop all trade--hae been his common theme. Sometimes he says 60%. Sometimes he says 100%. Sometimes he says "total trade ban." I don't remember exactly when he most recently said 100%--it was with Hannity on Fox.
The "vindication" you claimed for him isn't real, when you consider that he doesn't even know how tariffs work. He thinks that they are paid by the nation that exports goods. That's completely wrong. He thinks that they produce government revenue. He's wrong there, too, because they restrict profits and thus reduce income taxes collected--to a point that more than offsets the tariff revenue. That's not an abstract scenario, either--it's happened here every time we've imposed tariffs.
I know you follow Trump around like an adoring puppy, panting, hoping he'll pet you, but you need to learn that he most of the time has no idea what he's talking about. And insult me all you want; it won't change that fundamental reality.

Harris should push hard against this. Most of what you buy at the store is imported or has an imported component or ingredient. The idea that we can "protect" our domestic producers by forcing consumers to buy their products instead is beyond idiotic. If we choked off international trade a la Trump, our nation would wither and die. And it would happen FAST.
Here's what's both hilarious and alarming. All the bitching about INFLAYSHUN INFLAYSHUN INFLAYSHUN and ITZ ALL BIDENZ FAWLT. People like David tell us that INFLAYSHUN has been EIGHT HUNDRED AND FIFTY THOUSAND PERCENT during Biden's presidency, and Trump tells us there was NO inflation during his presidency and there won't be any if he become President again. Yup! Prices will stay exactly the same for four years. Yes siree Bob.
So we can conclude that the MAGAs don't like INFLAYSHUN, right? So do they even comprehend that their master wants to impose an economic policy that would make the inflation of 2021-2022 look like a Sunday school picnic?
MAGAs are as stupid as their orange master.
It is apparent that the collective morons here don't comprhend the effect of tariffs and why they are implemeeeented. Once again - What Are Tariffs? Tariffs are a type of trade barrier imposed by countries in order to raise the relative price of imported products compared to domestic ones. Tariffs typically come in the form of taxes or duties levied on importers and eventually passed on to end consumers. They're commonly used in international trade as a protectionist measure, with the aim of advantaging domestic producers and raising

Apparently when you make a mistake, all you can do is attack and spew filth.
