I don't consider the sports teams where I live to be an element of my identity. Nor do I consider them to be an element of my city's, state's, or country's identity.

Really, isn't it stupid to be "proud" of something you have absolutely nothing to do with? And if you're proud when "your" team wins, shouldn't you be ashamed when they lose???

You see, I view tribalism as the second greatest source of human misery, death, and destruction, second only to religion. And there ain't no greater display of tribalism than sports fandom.

I do on occasion have a mild desire for one team or the other to win, but I primarily watch sports to see good performances and artistry, by "my" team or "theirs." It matters not which.

I wouldn't really consider a sports team part of my identity or a city's identity. I just think it can be fun to havd a team to root for.

Again, that's because tribalism is a strong instinct for humans, given our social nature. It feels good to affiliate with others. Unfortunately, we extend that to showing automatic hostility to those who aren't members of our tribe.

That said, I can't watch a stadium full of howling fans without thinking of the opening "chimp war" scene in "2001."

When kevin was a kid waiting to be picked for a team, the team with the last pick would choose to play 1 person short than pick Kevin

How do all the people complaining about incivility in the Sink feel about Tom's continual stupid little snide personal attacks?

C'mon, folks! Admonish him! Don't be hypocrites!

Your comment has  "0" to do with the thread conversation...just a chance to get a zinger in on Kevin.

SMH @ Tom.

Is it that much different than rooting for any sports team? Do you root for your home team at a football or baseball game?

Or do you have a favorite team you root for in different sports?

There are no professional teams in Portland.  (and yes I know about the Trailblazers)

Thanks Tom for not using bad language.  But shame on you for being mean to Kevin.

He's made two gratuitous, childish personal attack posts in this thread alone. And he's made hundreds elsewhere.
