It certainly sounds like an awful idea to me and one that they may regret later.
One could argue it violates the equal protection clause in the way it discriminates based on age. But admittedly that might be a bit of a stretch.
I think that states can lawfully put age limits, both minimum and maximum, on holders of public office.
This effort in Viginia would NOT affect those already in office, so David's bleat is nonsense.
I applaud the spirit behind the proposal. Part of why America has been so fucked up lately is that we are being ruled by geriatrics--from both parties. Trump is too old to lead. So was Biden. We have senators and congresspersons in their eighties. They can't possibly understand the drastically changed world since their heyday, nor can they understand the needs and desires of people sixty years younger than them.
We have this cultural mantra, that older people are "wise." They aren't any wiser than young people, and as Trump has amply demonstrated, often, they're grossly foolish.
And before Miller starts raving about how old certain Democrat officeholders are, while ignoring all the old Republicans still farting away, I'd like to reiterate that the problem exists on both sides of the aisle. But as far as the Republicans are concerned, some of their nastiest, most reactionary fucks are their oldsters.
