Volkswagon going to 100% EV

Volkswagon next generation of combustion engines will be its last   Moving to 100% electric by 2030.

Wow - those electric vehicles seem to really be the future, dont they?

Them there gub'mit's pickin' winners and losers in the economy seems to be yielding transportation that is cleaner and not reliant on Middle East oil.      I guess you can run a car on a windmill after all.

I'm glad car executives put their faith in scientists instead of AM radio hosts.

And how many electric vehicles does PJ own?

I suspect like the number of caravan people he is sponsoring - zero

I only drive cars with manual transmissions which will sadly being going away once the automobile industry evolves fully to EV.      I currently drive a zippy 2009 Ford Focus which is pretty close to its end of life.  I'd get another one but Ford has discontinued them in the US.  I'm eyeing the new Mazda3 for my next vehicle which is a combustion engine that reportedly will get over 50 mpg.

Mazda's new Active-X engine

But the car after that will likely be EV....and so will Tom's...and so will everyone elses'.     Cause that's where the industry is heading despite people like Tom telling us for years that "you cant run no car off no windmill"

Unless they come up with a way to charge my car in a few minutes like a gas station, that would be a no as I have no way to charge my car at home.  Nor will the millions of people who park their cars on the street in urban areas.

And of course there are no plans to increase the electrical capacity that would be required to charge these cars.

NYC power plants are running close to 100% capacity now.

Well 2030 is a ways off yet. Not sure if VW will even still be in business. Like Tom mentions infrastructure has a ways to go for this total move.

I think electric is great for those that live in urban/suburban areas. Geographically speaking, most of the country is rural. I live in a rural area and electric cars just aren't feasible given their current range. For example, the Bolt has a 238-mile range.  That is under ideal conditions. On a humid summer Southen Indiana day, I'd likely not be able to make it to Louisville, Ky and back on a single charge running the AC. In Dec through March when cold weather hits and battery performance is at its lowest, I'd likely not even be able to make to Evansville IN and back on a single charge. Since I am going and coming back on the same day 90% of the time taking one to two hours in the middle of the trip to charge up really isn't feasible either. Bottom line is I think gas powered vehicles will be around a long time in the U.S. to service those of us that regularly do more than the typical commute of an urban or suburban driver.

Poor old DonDiego is  still  waiting for his flying car they promised him in the 1950s.

Maybe VW is making electric cars because they couldn't pass the emission tests on their deisel engines.  There is a parking lot near my house with hundreds of useless VW's sitting there because they had to provide refunds to those folks who purchased them.

And I'm waiting for the Ice Age to returned that they promised.
