Walmart confirms they are pulling their last 2 stores out of Portland Oregon

Krogers are located in strip malls.  I've not seen a Walmart in a strip mall.

I shop at Walmart 99%.  Prices and inventory are unbeatable anywhere else.

Edwards Food Giant has good deli and my pharmacy is located inside, the only two reasons I set foot in there.  I'm surprised they exist as prices are consistenly and signficantly higher than Walmart on every item I have ever priced.  Perhaps closer to some neighborhoods, less driving for some.

We have Family Market, very nice, equi-distant from my house with the closest Walmart.  I sometimes go to Family Market if I have just one or two necessary items to get.  Usually a produce item I forgot, a lemon or an onion or something that I need ASAP.  Prices higher on everything but good for stop in/one-two items.

Family Market has a few things in its favor:  Discount on everything every Thursday; close up parking; two gas pumps right there, name brand and competitive price/gal;  inside is nice, produce is fresh tho higher priced, shelves are nicely kept, employees nice and helpful, no long lines.   Been there forever, so I guess they do something right.

I've always found Walmart employees to be pleasant and helpful, can look up an item on their hand held gizmo and tell you which aisle to find it.  Some will actually walk you there.  Problem is that there isn't always an employee around when you need one.  But you can go to any other department or whatever and somebody will call somebody to help you.

Agree with you on the fact that Krogers are located in Strip Malls, and Walmarts aren't.  It's like that here in California.   I'm more apt to go to the local Ralph's/Krogersn(half mile from my house) on a weekly basis, compared to Walmart (closest one is about 8 miles), on a monthly or every two month basis.  Costco is just about as far for us and we shop there more than at Walmart.

I just shop WalMart online, pay for it and schedule the pickup (same day, usually in about four hours). Then I drive there and summon them on my phone app. They wheel everything out and load it in my trunk. I don't even have to get out of my car, let alone enter the store. And their complete inventory, including sales items, shows on the app, so I'm not missing anything by not going inside. Piece o'cake.

Our local WalMart competitor, Fred Meyer, also has online shopping and curbside pickup. I shop there for certain categories of items. Both places have delis and bakeries where I can get fresh stuff via the app. And both places almost always have the cheapest gas in town.

Competition is a beautiful thing. Wally and Fred are both great places to shop.

Online pickup is great. I use it for Walmart and Safeway. At first I was sceptical but now I use it all the time.

In addition to saving time, it makes shopping SO much easier. The app remembers what you buy often, so you can just bring up your previous shopping list and modify it as you wish.

I have no idea what "reason" Miller's Fakebook fuckhead gave for the WalMart closures, nor do I care. MY source is the Oregonian, which ran the story a couple of months ago. The two stores in Portland city proper were too small and their infrastructure was outdated. What Miller's Fakebook fuckhead doubtless didn't know is that those two stores are being relocated to the suburbs. There, they can operate with three times the square footage and a huge, dedicated parking lot, which the inner city WalMarts don't have.

WalMart is busier than ever. With the idiot shit for brains Turdiffs and SNAP benefits being destroyed, people are seeking out value more and more. NPR interviewed people leaving a WalMart and found several who were there for the first time.

If only there was some way to bar Trump voters from entering! They don't deserve bargains.

Candy, If you carry a smartphone you can use the app or website to lookup an item and it will show you where it is. With the app you can also "scan" barcodes to check prices.

Thank you, LiveFree.  I should try that.  I'm am an IT dunce, but mostly just averse to change, satisfied with my cell phone status quo.  I actually view the physical trip to anywhere as an excuse to increase activity.  Instead of fighting for a nearby parking spot I park far away enough to do some meaningful walking.  But thanks again.

Yesterday, it was 38 degrees, 25 mph winds, and a driving rain. I pulled up to the WalMart pickup area and a friendly dude came out and loaded my order into my trunk.

It might have been beneficial to my health to park far away and fight the weather to walk into the store and push a cart around, then stand in line to pay. But aside from the discomfort, that would have consumed an extra hour of my time, so little of which is allotted to us on this mortal orb.

If you own a smartphone and you're comfortable playing around with it. You should check out their website and app. If you are physically in the store and can't find a worker, you can look up a product and it will tell you what aisle to find it in. If you find a product and are unsure of the price you can scan with your phone and get the price.

Those would be tangible benefits, even if I still enjoy getting out and about.  Thanks.  I will look into getting into the modern age with my cell phone.  LOL.

I think the people it benefits most are those who have trouble carving out enough time from their busy schedules to shop. I agree that shopping can sometimes be kinda fun. But boy, when it's a chore, it's a royal pain.

While it's not within my personal experience, I wonder if families scan the digital shopping cart and Sweet Woogums can ensure that Mom doesn't forget the Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs.
