I would encourage you to look into the history of American isolationism and protectionism--especially with regard to the 1930s. Please refresh your memory of Neville Chamberlain/"Peace in our time"/Sudetenland and the Smoot-Hadley Tariff. Your urge to withdraw from an increasingly interconnected world economy and complex geopolitical environment has been tried before--with devastating consequences.
Trump is dragging us into a state of trade isolation, and unlike many of his policies, that actually has a purpose, albeit a grossly stupid and counterproductive one. He and MAGA have long barfed out "whatever independence," a desire to fulfill our own needs exclusively with our own resources and production. Good luck with that!
We are irrevocably interconnected and interdependent with the rest of the world. That's the reality, whether MAGA likes it or not.
And of course, Trump's hostility toward our allies and his blithe willingness to dishonor treaties and agreements is sending us into a state of diplomatic and even military isolation as well. All part of the stupid fantasy that we can go it alone in this world and get anything we need by threats and bullying.
