Sincere question: Can anyone here think of an innocent explanation for this to happen?

 More "speculation" without provable facts. It doesn't take much for the lying media and the left to make up what happened and why. But they are known for this - it is just another ploy to amp up the brain washed liberals who havn't a clue about reality. Intelligent people wait for all of the facts to be presented - morons make up their own "facts", as seen here by Picture.
