A poorly run company would only consider the scientist's view on what is the best product. The marketing guys would have some good input, as they know what the customer wants, while the scientists only know that they like. Then there is the cost to produce the product, which the scientists are always oblivious to. Management needs to consider this, because price has influence on the customer's decision to buy. How about evaluating the competition? Scientists don’t have a clue about this.
