Who will be the Democrats' 2028 Presidential candidate? Who SHOULD be?

We're seeing now that the damage and destruction done by Trump will be far more extensive and perhaps irreversible than during his first term. By 2028, America will be suffering tremendously, with hundreds of thousands of unnecessary deaths and massive, widespread poverty..

So you might think that given America's tendency to elect someone from the other party than the incumbent when things are less than perfect, just about anyone would do. But that's what we thought with Harris. I think she butchered her campaign, though she was handicapped by a lack of preparation time.

So here's who I think SHOULD run:

Pete Buttigleg

Andy Beshear

Amy Klobuchar

Somebody completely out of left field

Here's who I think WILL run:

Gavin Newsom

Beto O'Rourke

Chuck Schumer

The governor of a red state who has somehow managed to get himself elected multiple times despite being a Democrat (other than Beshear)

What's your take on this?

I am good with Gavin.  I'm good with Pritzker.  I am good with AOC (I expect her to run for Schumer's seat, not President), and I am comfortable with someone relatively unknown, like Obama was when he ran. I like Beshear ( a good VP pick to balance the ticket), but I don't think it is the right time for him, nor do I think it is the right time for Klobuchar to run for President. We don't need a moderate that is going to make nice with Republicans by being an old school Republican lite. We need someone who is actually going to do something for the American people.  Now is the time to run a liberal, not a moderate.

The traditionalists in the Democratic Party seem to think people merely crave a return to the status quo of pre-pandemic America.  I have news for them. If that is how they run in the next Presidential election, expect to lose.  Some of the folks who voted for Trump aren't necessarily MAGAs; they were folks for whom the pre-pandemic status quo wasn't working. Democrats need to quit telling people it isn't possible to have good healthcare, it isn't possible to have affordable housing,  it isn't possible to make corporations and the wealthy pay their fair share and on and on.  We have to quit being party where our candidates campaign I will try my best, but I am not hopeful.

Mark, I like AOC, but I'm sorry to say that a woman cannot possibly win the Presidency, due to that enduring 5% that would NEVER vote for a female candidate. Add to that the millions of voters who hate Hispanics, and she would get crushed.

I do agree that the Dems should go all in, in 2026 and 2028. The one bright spot of the incoming Trump depression is that their message should be that more resonant as a consequence. Make our party the party of the people and their party the party of the rich and big corporations. Then let's see who gets more votes.

That's why I think she will run for Senate.  Because so much of the population is misogynistic, homophobic  and racist, the only path to victory I see is a straight white male. If they aren't, Republicans are going to fan those flames of hate to try and win. They is no point in giving them someone that they can do that with.

I just don't want a nominee who's idea of fighting back is a strongly worded letter.

Agree with all.Newsom my state.I have mixed feelings about him.Nevertheless he

will put up a good fight.

The only one who I would vote for is Andy Beshear.  A Democrat governor of a former slave state can cross party lines especially in the south.

Yeah, getting elected in Kentucky was quite a feat. I listened to an interview on Louisville NPR (yes! even Kentucky has NPR!), and he seems like a very level-headed dude. Only thing that occurs to me is we may need an angry fire-breather who will denounce Trump and MAGA and take no prisoners, rather than a hands-across-the-chasm type of guy.

I think that may depend on how many 2024 Trump voters (fuckin' idiots!) aren't ideologically committed to MAGA and voted with their pocketbooks (buying the MAGA "Bidenflation" crap).

I think Beshear would be a wise choice for the Democrats. He has demonstrated that he knows how to win in a red State. But it's been awhile since either major party has made a wise choice in the primary.

Another good choice would be Bernie Sanders but he's a bit old now. I disagree with him on several things but I have a tremendous amount of respect for him.

A Sanders - Beshear ticket would be quite interesting.

For the relatively unknown candidate I would like to submit for for consideration James Talarico. He is a member of the Texas House of Representatives. I have been watching him a bit and I find him really impressive.

My dream election/debate would be Bernie Sanders or James Talarico vs Rand Paul or Thomas Massie.

Either way I will likely continue to "waste" my vote on the Libertarian candidate.

Have you heard of James Talarico? He's in the Texas House of Representatives.

Both Kentucky and West Virginia have the same dynamic.   The Democratic party is very popular in state and local elections....but not at all at the Federal level.   Its not crazy that Beshear got elected as governor there.     Plenty of blue governors in the past.    Having said that - I think he's fine.

Gov Shapiro in Pa is probably my favorite (A) because he's good at governing and (B) because polling shows him beating any MAGA candidate.

Going forward both parties are in trouble in so far as they dont have anyone with rockstar status.   Nobody in the Democrat party carries the charisma and leadership of Barack Obama and Bill Clinton....and nobody in the Republican party carries it like Donald Trump.

The best thing about MAGA is it lives and dies with DOnald Trump.  Nobody else in that wing of the Republican party polls well....Vance, DeSantis, Don Jr, Abbott,Cotton.....which is weird to me.   They're dicks just like Trump but for some reason MAGA actually thinks so too.
