Will Socialism save Seattle? City advocates struggle to find solutions as homeless, drug addicts flood streets

That's a lovely plan.  But...look at how many "free clinics" there are in any city.  I know of one here, run by one paid administrator, a volunteer doctor and a few volunteer nurses and others who rotate working it a few days a week.  And a volunteer dentist or two who work it a few days a month.  Their own practice schedules are full.

Compare that to the number of fee-for-service clinics in any city.  Hundreds, made possible by insurance, Medicare, private pay, etc.  The money to run Kevin's wonderland has to come from somewhere, and homeless generally aren't paying anything into the system.  And lack the inclination to take the 'windfall' of a decent place to live, get cleaned up, find work, find training for better work, and so on.  Like Brent Kline's friend's sons...no inclination.

Why should these people have any inclination to better themselves as long as they can maintain their chosen lifestyle that is paid for by tax payers?

Exactly.  At least I think we are saying the same thing.

I don't have any stats.  All I do know is what their dad says, and the fact that whenever they come home they always seem to get arrested for drugs or theft.  Last year they missed the funeral for their mother because they were in jail.  If Seattle wants to foot the bill for these kinds of people more power to them.  I am just happy when these 2 are not in our town

It's absurd to make a blanket generalized statement about an entire city based on anecdotes about two teenage boys.

Oh, brother. Yeah, they're all worthless bums who just want to kick back and enjoy a luxurious sleeping-on-the-streets lifestyle paid for by taxpayers.

A truly classic attitude! Why help them? They're worthless. They have no interest in improving their own situation. They're trash. They're scum. I won't lift a finger or pay a dime to help them.

This is where I would make an observation that such an attitude isn't very Christian...😛

In my "wonderland," no one starves or freezes or lacks medical care, even if they're NOT worthy, by whatever metric you prefer. And yeah, taxpayers foot the bill. Why am I OK with that? Because we throw away enough food to feed tens of millions of people. We discard enough clothing to clothe them. And we have enough empty dwellings to house them. We're a goddamn rich nation. We can AFFORD compassion!

Again, I have to point out that Europe has a social welfare system that takes care of ALL its people, worthy or not. And they're prosperous and happy. So unless they're just smarter than us, we could do it too, if we wanted to.

But no, let's demonize all those lazy homeless bums. Send a truck round the neighborhoods every week, pick up the bodies, send them to be turned into compost. The ones that don't die soon enough, well, just shoot 'em.

And of course, no homeless person has ever worked in their life, so they've never "paid into the system" and deserve nothing.

Jesus!

I spend a fair amount of my own time and money helping the homeless here in Portland. There are lots of good people staffing shelters, food banks, clinics, etc. But they're all unsung heroes. A LOT of folks openly resent what they're doing. They say that it just encourages those awful worthless subhuman scum to hang around and go on living, breathing, and other crimes.

I agree with y'all. Just kill them. Round them up for orderly disposal.

Are any of the homeless doing the staffing, after they experience being on the receiving end?  Just askin'.

That does in fact happen fairly often. Not all of them are shiftless, ungrateful subhuman bums.

If a person is homeless and looking for employment, there are programs to employ them at shelters. The cost of their residency + food is deducted from their pay. That's done in Portland and I imagine, other cities as well.

That program was created, I believe, in recognition of just how brutally difficult it is to recover from homelessness and get and keep a job. You need shelter, clothing, a place to get clean every day, etc. The "halfway" step of employing people at the shelter where they live eases the transition back to "normal" life.
