Would Canada and Mexico prefer to trade with Pacifica or Trumpland?

Canada says they will turn the power off if Trump hits them with tariffs.

Electricity exchanges across the United States and Canada—historically each other’s largest electricity trading partners—remain relatively small, representing less than 1% of their respective total generation.

I think the US will be able to handle it.  The US also sends electricity to Canada

After the Trump announced the potential tariffs trudeau went right down to Florida, so obviously he is concerned.

1.5 million homes is a lot of homes and I suspect they are in a concentrated area. Wouldn't it be sweet if energy prices quadrupled this winter?

The juice flows both ways so the US could turn off their juice

Stupid Tom, you might not know this, but Canada's "hydro" (hydropower) can supply all of their needs and then some. They buy electricity from the US where its cities are in close proximity to US cities--primarily in the northeast US/southeast Canada.

The two countries have their grids connected so that one can help make up sudden demand on the other, for example if bad weather hits a given area. It's convenient and cost-effective for both countries--just like trade of other goods.

But Canada can tell Trump to go fuck himself if they want to. And they will if your orange hero gets too pushy.

Canadian power goes primarily to Michigan, Wisconsin and New York state.

Trump promised to cut energy prices by half in 18 months. I'm not sure how you can reconcile that.

Among Canada's immense natural resources is a gigantic hydroelectric capacity. The James Bay project, all by itself, supplies 45% of Canada's needs. Dams on British Columbia's six major rivers supply about that much as well. And of course, Canada has huge fossil fuel reserves.

Which is why they sell us power. They have a generating surplus.

Trudeau may have flown to Mar El Asshole, but i suspect it was not to lick Trump's boots but to call his bluff. Trump thinks he can bully Canada. He might already have gotten a big surprise.

Trudeau may not be reelected in Oct 2025; his popularity is ..well..way down among their electorate. I suspect a large part of his motivation for the Fla. visit was for political optics. The Canadian parliament tension between liberal / conservative parties is currently almost as contentious as our US Congress.

That's right. I live in Victoria, B.C.  The NDP just won an election with the slimmest majority.  People are fed up with the current governments.

I doubt that his replacement would want to be subservient to Trump or listen to his threats. While I'm not Canadian, I spend a lot of time there, and one thing they're really sensitive about is being pushed around (however benevolently) by their much more powerful neighbor.

Also, Trudeau's personality has less influence on Canadian affairs than Trump's has on American affairs. The Canadian Prime Minister has certain jobs and functions and will do them regardless of party affiliation or personal quirks. Trump, in contrast, will do whatever the hell he wants, with no respect (at ALL) for the Constitution or the rule of law. So the Canada-US relationship is changed much more when we change chief executives than when they do.

That's right, Kevin

The 25% tariffs that Trump is proposing is very alarming.  The premiers of each province will have to deal with that, if it comes to pass.
