I remember the last time there was an actual default and the government shut down--for the same tiresome reason that's happening now: Republicans holding the country hostage. It boomeranged on them, as a LOT of ordinary people got fucked over. Fortunately, a Democratic President used his authority to make the people who had been hurt whole again, paying the US's rightful debts.

But I'm not really all that worried. All but perhaps the most deranged of the RepubliQ know the huge political cost of letting the country actually go into default. Biden is right to be calling their bluff. He might throw them a bone so they can claim victory when they preach to the base.
I suspect that this is why Biden hasn't made much talk about invoking the 14th Amendment. He wouldn't be all that unhappy if the RepubliQ went ahead and triggered the default. The political fallout would bury them.
