Best place to rent a car?

Heading to LV next Thursday, CAN'T WAIT!!!

We've always used the public transporation, but this time would like to make
a trip to Red Rock...any suggestions on where the best place to rent a car would be?
There is no single "best place", because the "best place" varies wildly depending on the renter's needs.

Are you flying in or taking a bus?
Do you want the car for your whole trip or just a day or two during the trip?
How much extra are you willing to pay for convenience?

If you flesh out your question a little more, we can make some informed suggestions for you.
There is no best place. Use Priceline or Hotwire (or other places) and go with the cheapest. It will vary from day to day and from car type to other car type. There is absolutely no reason to be committed to a particular car rental company. Roy
Sorry, I should have been more specific. We plan to rent the car for our entire stay, 3/31 @ 5pm through
4/8 @ 7 am. My question was, is there a disadvantage to picking up the car at the airport, or are there other places, such as the hotels, that might be a better deal. I will do some research as suggested...we are flying in from the East Coast. Not all that concerned about spending a couple of extra bucks...although
that will be a few less chips spent on the craps table!!

Lately I've been finding that airport pickup rates drop significantly in the last 2 weeks or so before arrival. So, as so many have said here previously, if you're not happy with your rate, keep checking back, they can drop by a lot.

Many of the larger hotels have rental car companies on site. So, if you only need a car for part of your trip, I suggest you try to rent there, for convenience sake. Also, you'll avoid many of the fees that only apply to cars rented at the airport.

Lastly, I've found that airport rates and fees can be so high that it you can save a lot of money by renting off-airport. I recently saved $180 on a week-long Hertz rental at San Jose by renting not at the airport, but at a Hertz office near the hotel I was staying at. When I arrived at the airport on a Friday night, I took a taxi to the hotel ($15). On Saturday morning, Hertz drove my car to my hotel, picked me up, and brought me to their rental office in a different hotel a few blocks away. I signed the agreement, and off I went, saving $180 on the weeklong rental over what any of the majors would give me at the airport. Oh, and I was able to drop the car at the airport for no additional charge.

Just some tips, hope they help.
As said earlier, it's hard to say who's best. I used Dollar for a long time, but things change. Their rates aren't always as low as they were and now I hear they assign you a car before you pick up. It used to be that you would pick any car from your size catagory and usually a class or two up without any problem. National now advertises that you can pick your own. I like this option.

Hotwire, Priceline or a company you've never used present one problem for me and that's class definition. A good price on a midsize (what I usually get) is fine, unless it's not a real midsize. I rented from Payless once got a Suzuki I'd never heard of that was passed off as a mid. My last trip I got a super price from Alamo (same co. as Nat'l) and could pick any car in my class. Unfortunatley, all four varieties were obviously compacts, not midsize. The price I got was so good that it didn't bother me as it was a solo trip. Just sure to check each companie's definition of car class. They'll usually say Ford Fusion or similar for instance. I want to know what "similar" is. This can turn a good deal into medocre in no time. Hotwire and Priceline both use only the major rental companies, so it's easy to check.

With just a bit of online homework, you should find a good deal.

Good Luck!

One last point.

When you go to pick up your assigned car at
Avis, Hertz, etc., if you don't like the car
you can return to the glassed-in booth and ask
for another.

They always give me at least 3 other choices
and sometimes as many as 10. LOL

I don't know if it's because of my status level
with the various car rental companies or not.

I don't think so.

I have not done this for about 6 months because the cars they have for me are fine.

Good luck!!!

Rent the cheapest car you can find and tip the yard guy $10. It does wonders. Don't tip the counter person if you are looking for an upgrade, only if you are pleased by better than average service. The yard people can, and will, upgrade you happily for a tip of a few dollars.
I'd stay away from Fox as it requires a second shuttle ride, and I've heard they can be tough on their requirements insurance wise.
Dunno if you've booked a car, or if you'll even see this before your trip, but I just found a rate of $163.03 total including all the taxes and fees through Alamo for your dates, which seems pretty decent for a last-minute rental.

Use ID 7015135 , coupon code AD4027JDO , and you must be an Alamo Insiders member (free to sign up). Set the start time of your rental to either 4:30p or 5:30p instead of your desired 5:00p as the rate is much higher for some reason if you book with a 5:00p start vs. 4:30 or 5:30.
Just rented a midsize at the airport for 156.00 for the first week in May. Priceline 11 a day plus tax
