cab fares

We are frequent travelers to Las Vegas and one of our complaints when we leave is that we didn't see enough of the "heart" of Las Vegas....too much moving around to outskirt casinos, etc. So, this year, we've decided to leave the rental car and do our traveling on foot. However, that leaves us with the hurdle of getting from the airport to downtown, then downtown to ballys, then ballys to downtown. These rides we figured on getting a cab because the fear of the 2 hour drive on a bus stopping at every casino does not appeal to us. With that said, how much can we expect to pay for cab fares? How do we identify the "long haul"?
I know you mentioned not wanting to wait for the bus, etc. But one thing you may want to look at with Downtown to Bally's is that the Bus Transit system now has an "express" route that stops at less casinos, hits Fremont Street and If I remember one of the casinos it does stop at is Paris, right next to Bally's...It is really quick because a lot of the time it goes behind the strip for getting to Point A to Point B. There is no scanning of your bus pass either. Someone at the stop makes sure you have it when you get on, people can't ask the driver questions because he is behind plexi-glass from the rest of the passengers...Quick on, Quick off...and really easy...
If you have an IPhone or Ipod touch you can get an app for $1.99 called "Vegas Mate" that provides the average cab fare from the airport to every Vegas casino (along with a lot of other features).

I'm told that if you do get long-hauled, an effective strategy is to tell the driver you will only pay what you believe the correct fare to be, and if he doesn't agree, he and you can both wait for a rep from the taxi authority. Caveat emptor: I've never done this myself; if I did, I'd make sure I had my bags out of the trunk first....)
