car rental question

I looked under transportation but could not find an answer to my question.

I booked a car (Hertze) for next week in Vegas (5-14 thru 5-21) and my wife now wants to take a day trip to the grand canyon. I have studied up on the trip itself but have a quick rental car question

When I am signing the rental agreement they always ask if I am taking the car out of state. I never do take it out of state so it has always been a non issue.

What happenes if I say "yes" I am taking it out of state? #2 Should I just simply say no and go anyway?

Thanks Weggie
I've never been asked that question, so I have no idea how you should answer it. Sorry!
I think you are always best off telling the truth. If you say no, and have an out-of-state accident, then you will have to worry over extra liability.

I have rented over twenty times with probably 8 to 10 different companies and I've always been asked this question also. I don't think it will cost you any more, but whatever, I would answer honestly, because accident or not, I think there are tracking devices they use and they know it you have gone out of state.

I agree. We've rented many times and do a lot of road trips to surrounding states. We always tell them where we're going (if they ask) and it's never been an issue/problem.
Almost every company in Vegas allows you to drive in Nevada, Arizona and California with no extra fees. I once told the counter person I might go up to Bryce in Utah and was told that as long as I wasn't staying in Utah overnite, it was no problem.
Be honest. I will fly into one state and often drive into another to visit a client or two. I know Enterprise wants to know if the car is taken out of state. Not sure about Hertz though. The only time I was expressly told I couldn't take a car out of state was in San Diego where they didn't want it going into Mexico. I could go to Arizona or Nevada, but not Mexico. That makes sense though.
They'll generally let you drive the car within California, Nevada and Arizona with no problem......they don't want you taking the car to Mexico
Certain rental car companies put that in their
contracts.

I don't recall ever seeing it for Hertz.

Enterprise and I think Dollar have it.

I'm not sure why they put it in there.

If you see it then I would ask them about it.

If you have an accident outside the state limitation they put in their contract you
probably will have a problem.

Don't listen to what counter people tell you.

What's in the contract is what counts.

If the counter person tells you it's OK and the contract does not then have the counter person write, "OK to take out of state" and have them sign it.
Actually, if it doesn't limit you in the contract, you are okay. What the contract doesn't say is just as important as what it does. Absent any terms restricting use, you are good to go.
