Cheapest access to secure internet

Thought we were moving to Vegas but can not find a buyer for our home.

So when Elaine retires this fall we are doing a long trip. I am not too sharp with computers but I do all my bills and banking online. Where would be the best place to access online banking with my laptop?
The internet itself need not be secure. As long as the website has https in the URL everything is encrypted and you are safe.

OK, I am limited in my knowledge, as I said. However, I used the free WIFI at MSS a few years ago and got a boat load of spam. I was told my bank internet connection was easily hacked from that type of connection.
Please advise.
I'm not a techy but I've read enough stories about the need to be very careful when accessing the internet in public areas as it can be a prime hacking area. Something about it being easier to do when it's public verses internet access you might have at home that requires a special log in to access. Other more knowledgeable folks should chime in! I DO use free wi fi with some regularity but I try not to do any kind of financial transactions when on a "public" computer (my computer using public wi fi).

I am thinking the hotel where you stay that has an access code for guests would be better. It's why I like hotels with free room internet access, like Holiday Inn Express, etc.

Almost every Starbucks and some McDonalds offer free wifi as well as public libraries. If you stay at a Stations property, internet is included with the resort fee. The resort fee is comped if the room is comped. CET diamond lounges also offer complimentary internet. In Phoenix, most every Paradise Bakery and Coffee Tea & Bean Leaf also offer free wifi. Kinkos and Alphagraphics offer internet for a fee.
If you're on public wifi, don't do anything that you wouldn't want anyone to see. There's even an add-on in firefox (firesheep) that anyone can use to scrape your login/passwords on any public wifi.

Set up your own VPN (virtual private network) when on public wifi. Hamachi is currently free for individual use. Or you can google it and find others that are free.

Or you can just pay for a VPN, such as a proxy server. (maybe $7-$8 per month)

Speak with your bank about it.
Panara Bread stores also have free wifi.

LVHOBO,
That is interesting about the VPN. I have heard of that but I am fairly ignorant in the ways of wireless communications (just got my first "smartphone" and it showed me how dumb I am). Can a VPN make your communications secure if you are linked to the internet through a public place (library, McDonalds, etc.)?
Thanks,
Croc

Check out Virgin Mobile. It is not free but I think you will find it to be an inexpensive option that does not require an extended contract. I bought a usb adapter that can be moved between computers that will allow access or you can get an adapter so you can use more than one computer at the same time. It uses the sprint cell phone network and have been able to use it during travels about the usa.
