Yes, obviously. But the phrase is much older than anything that would be a common idiom today. It's actually used several times in the Old Testament, and refers to wrapping a tunic around your waist (thus freeing up your legs) in preparation for battle. So, "girding," as in "girdle." A physical, not a mental preparation.
