Gold Spike Rooms/Atmosphere?!

Im in the process of planning the next solo trip to Vegas and am curious to stay at the new Spike. I have played there a few times and usually have a pretty good time. Its clean and loud and the dealers are fun. But Im still a little skeptical about staying for more than a few hours..

Anybody stayed there? thoughts?

Thanks
Marko..
I haven't stayed there, but IMHO they have cleaned it up TOO much. The spike used to be somewhat rough around the edges. It smelled like booze and smoke...and the clientele were interesting to say the least. It was a nice break from the rest of the Fremont Street casinos (that smell only slightly less of booze and smoke.)

I visited the spike in March. It has changed so much! I didn't like it. No more coin-in poker machines, and no crazy people sitting at the bar...except for me.

Give it a try! I wouldn't be afraid to stay there.
I have stayed there twice since the remodel, had a poolside room, which was nice since I use the pool alot. Chadley is right about the inside now " kind of reminds me of a walgreens " with a few machines.
The Spikes beds are like sleeping on the beds in Mexico ( hard) paint in the room is lime green...so when the bright lights hits the wall in the night ...( through the cheap vertical blinds) I have to say the pool looks ok....we hated the place so much, that we never tried it. Good for a night/quick shower...maybe.

Despite my curosity to check out the Gold Spike for the weekend.. I booked a room at the Golden Gate instead... Spike looks ok.. but Im a creature of habit and being right on Fremont and the Shrimp Cocktail won me over..

Oh, and the cheaper room rates didnt hurt..

marko..
Golden Gate...beds are great, easy access to the room and the windows open. Alittle small but if your travelling alone ..who cares~! Good luck have fun...
Marko - Let me know how you like the Golden Gate if you don't mind. It is one of the three downtown hotels I haven't stayed at yet (along with Gold Spike and El Cortez). Heck, that sounds like a good plan for my next trip. Hit all three for a night or two.

Good luck, and enjoy your trip!

And Lee O - LOL at the Walgreens comment. You are right on! I couldn't have said it any better.
Will do - sadly, my trip is not scheduled till early August.

However, I'm already planning every detail of the trip.. Where to use what MRB coupon and how I can hit as many casinos on the free shuttles as possible..

You said you have stayed at just about every hotel downtown, which ones are your favorite?

I'm a fan of the Plaza, always have been. But want to check out everything eventually..

marko..
Judging by room quality, my top two downtown hotels would be 1) Golden Nugget 2) Main St Station. I have stayed at both several times, and their rooms have always been very nice. As for the other downtown hotels, I have had some nice rooms and some crappy ones at the same place on different trips. That said, I don't choose a hotel in Vegas based on room quality...I go for the cheapest (or comped) room every time. Give me a bed and shower and I'm happy lol.

Like you, I love the Plaza. Have spent more nights there over the years than anywhere else. But it really went downhill after Jackie Gaughan sold it. They totally ruined the video poker and blackjack, my two games of choice. To top it off, they got rid of the Omaha Lounge "entertainment" lol. I visited the Plaza in March and they are definitely remodeling the place. Hopefully it will once again be the place to play downtown!

BTW I read on another board the Plaza is taking reservations starting August 1. If so, I might have to take a quick weekend trip and check it out!

We stayed at the Gold Spike for a month last Sept. Everything was new - clean & bright. Staff
was friendly & very accomodating. We used the pool everyday, which was a bonus as the El Co
& the Golden Gate don't have pools. For the price, it couldn't be beat.
