Is Vegas the only place you still use cash?

I just went through my bank statements year to date and realized I've yet to make a single ATM withdraw so far this year.     I dont have any cash transactions.

I do have an upcoming road trip where I'll be driving through W Virginia....and they still have cash toll booths  SO I'll need some there....but otherwise the only place I think I still use cash is in Vegas.

I have to believe that is going to be on its way out in the near future.   It will be interesting to see how money is exchanged 10 years from now.

I have heard of people getting cash advance from credit card now.I never have got cash advance for any reason.Because of penalties.I bet you will be able to buy some form of volchers with credit cards.I still bring back up cash.

I always carry cash, but have used an ATM less than a handful of times my whole life. Gas station/corner store near me has prices at least 25 cents per gallon cheaper than anywhere else in town - cash only. We also try to leave cash tips in restaurants, coffee shops, etc.

Brings up a question, just how will "no tax on tips" work?  I also tip almost exclusively in cash, even when a CC is used for the meal or whatever.  Just wondering.  Please no divisive slams on anybody or anything, no political talk.  I mean it!!!  LOL.

The IRS estimates a food server's tip income at 8% of the bill. The restaurant reports the gross amount and the server is expected to report the actual amount of tips. If that doesn't at least equal that 8%, the IRS will assume tips were underreported.

Since most servers do considerably better than that 8%, the effect is that about half of their tip income isn't taxed anyway.

The cheapest gas station near me charges 10 cents per gallon for debit or credit card. So they get my cash. I also pay cash to small business merchants, since they get hit with a 3-4% fee if I use a card.

We will still need cash as long as we have poor people. Not everyone has or can get a bank account/debit card, never mind a credit card. Should MAGA succeed in its goal of killing all the poor people, cash may slowly obsolesce.

I still use cash in my everyday life, I won't go into details, but I categorized my money, so one category is cash in my wallet. I also always have a cash gambling bankroll for my weekly AP video poker play.

There's always been some advocacy for configuring slots to accept debit and/or credit cards---the technology is certainly already in existence--but others say it would make it too easy for gamblers to bleed out. At least, if you have to hit the ATM, that's a few minutes' time-out.

Like you PJ, I hardly ever use cash outside a casino. I don't get any break for using cash to pay for gas, so if I were to use cash I'd be giving up the 1.5% - 5% cash back (depending on purchase category) that I get from a credit card.

I've considered using cash for local businesses, but why is it up to me to take the hit? If a local business told me they'd split the savings with me, I'd be happy to oblige. So let's say their swipe fee is 3%; give me a 1.5% discount for cash and we both come out ahead.

There's an Indian Casino near where I grew up in Buffalo NY.     They actually keep your money on your players club card.   So you walk in and hand the cashier $100 - they press a few buttons and it goes onto your players card....then you can just use that at any machine.    Problem is you have to enter your pin every time you go to a new machine.

Even in this example you still need cash....but you can see how some variant of this might ultimately be implmented in the future.
