True.

For as much complaining as people do about resort fees Vegas is still cheap compared to most cities.    4 and 5 star hotels in most cities run well over $200/night.

I stayed at the famous Peabody Hotel in Memphis for $250/night.     The rooms were about on par with the ones at the Paris in Vegas which go for half that even with the resort fee.

I think that one reason for that is that if you're staying in a nice hotel in a real city, you're near all the attractions that city has to offer, and in a central location. Think of all the stuff to see and do that's nearby if you're staying in New York City or San Francisco--or even Dallas (yee haw!). Vegas, by contrast, has...casinos. And they're dispersed over a wide area, except for downtown--which has nothing else to offer. So you pay less for a hotel room in Vegas, but you get less.

I suppose we can thank all the faceless hordes of nimrods who swarm onto the 89% return slots and crowd the $25 minimum 6:5 blackjack tables for that. If the average Vegas visitor wasn't a moron, they'd have to REALLY gouge us for rooms.

Yep, there's nothing to do in Vegas.

IMHO most "studies" are bunk, not to be taken as holy gospel.

A "worst" city to live in might be my or your favorite place for whatever things factor in, and vice versa.  Crime rates are reported from and to different sources:  Local police, state police, etc. including their use of crime terminology.  What you read may not be the whole story.

As for lodging,  I've paid a higher price for a motel night in the middle of nowhere than the rack rate at Bellagio for that date.  Might have been football homecoming or graduation weekend in that "nowhere" city, plus maybe a "special" going on a Bel, who knows.  Variables rule the day.

And talk about taxes.  Hotel tax (i.e. "hospitality tax", state tax, city tax")  in some cities can be ridiculously high.  Maybe they don't call it resort fee, but you we  pay it anyway.

BTW, if checking into a "nowhere" Hilton Grand Garden or similar motel never accept the initially quoted rate for your room.  You can usually negotiate it down.  Never hurts to try.  My SIL taught me that; she always negotiates and gets some dollars off the initial quote.
