That's a nice thought, but largely impractical.
Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays have long been the cheaper days to fly. Mondays and fridays are major days for business travel, which also makes the most money for airlines because those guys are paying the heavy freight. Schedules are not designed fior the convenience of the leisure traveler. There's also the whole hub and spoke system of all major carriers. They aren't going to purposefully route you from a smaller airport (say, Dayton) at a better price/time when, say, Delta operates a major hub from Cincinnati. Which (no coincidence) happens to have some of the most expensive fares in the entire country.
