Pre F1 Vegas visit

The only trouble with doing it now is that his grandson's memories might wind up being of sitting in traffic for hours and a Coke costing $16. They'll probably have fun-ish (that is so a word), but if he wants to see/experience Vegas, this would be one of the worst times to do it.

Though come to think of it...if the result of the trip is that his grandson thinks, "Jesus, I'm never coming back here!," that might be highly beneficial to him, in financial and other ways.

Future laughs, Kevin.  I should have added "future."  Some of my family's best laughs are from long ago happenings that at the time we thought "oh no."

Because in the long run theyt didn't kill us, but gave us some precious memories to tell over and over, some of which of course get better with the telling.

Yeah, when I was a kid, our family had a private plane, and relatives all across the country, plus, we were avid campers, so we spent every summer buzzing all over this great land of ours, and I can honestly say that we never "oh noed" even when we probably should have. Every place had something interesting, often totally unexpected. Because of this aspect of my childhood, I've always been an avid traveler.

One glaring exception to the above: my maternal grandma and grandpa lived in Hialeah; basically, Miami. We visited them in July. I anticipated someplace exotic and interesting. Beaches, tropical this and that, etc. It turned out to be a ghastly, unpleasantly hot and humid shithole with trillions of bugs large and small and occasionally huge. Never been back.

But otherwise ..my travels have taken me to many places that I didn't think were worth a sideways glance, let alone a stop, but there's always been something intriguing. And every once in a while, there's a revelation, like a little cafe in the absolute middle of nowhere prominently advertising its rhubarb pie. I overcame my skepticism and stopped and tried it. Best damn pie I've ever had, and I would never have considered it in any other context.

If I had a grandson and took him to Vegas, my fear would be that he would LIKE the place and return in the future, when he had come of age, with his savings from his Starbucks job in his hands and stars in his eyes, and get crushed like a grape.

Actually, come to think of it, if he hit a few jackpots and came home with several thousand $$$ more than he left, that would ultimately prove to be a far worse outcome.

Reports from last year were that it could take as much as two hours to get from one side of I-15 to the other (say, Decatur to Maryland Parkway)--for the entirety of the F-U festivities (all day, every day). So my first suggestion is: don't even try it. Don't go anywhere other than where you have to go to watch the zoom zoom. My second suggestion, I don't even know if it will work, but: the Desert Inn Road "flyover" and Russell Road are two ways to do-si-do around Strip traffic. If you need to.

My third suggestion would be to never bother to attend an auto race, and for God's sake, don't pay for it. It's the most boring spectator sport in the world, and what you'll quickly notice is, from any vantage point, you can only see about one-fiftieth of the race, and you only see the cars for a half-second each time around. But hey, I realize, this is the family equivalent of a diplomatic mission. Pick a couple of nice places to eat, far away from the "action" if you can manage it (unfortunately, Lyft and Uber will be horribly expensive), and try to arrange some way to "tour" the Strip for your grandson's benefit.

Actually, there's a cheapo option for that! Take the Deuce bus and get a very slow $5 tour of the Strip. Sit in the upper deck. It's actually a great way to see Vegas. When you get on at first, upper deck seats may not be available, but you can "migrate" upwards as the bus stops and people get off.

My fourth suggestion would be to not go. Break a leg. Contract a severe cold. Get arrested. Anything.

Good luck 😛🤮😂👍

Yes, your response, unlike mine, is fascinating and profound.

Please resume taking your medications. The mood swings you're experiencing could be dangerous to those around you.

I don't think anything could make you a better person, though.

Dan - say "hello" to Kevin Lewis, the resident know- it -all who has all the answers and will not be questioned. If you should disagree with him, he will tell you what you should do personally while besmurching you.

No, David, you didn't start the conflict this time--Dan did.

You are both best ignored.

It might not be that bad if you are content to stay within walking distance of your resorts.    There's no law that requires you to drive.   I like to have a rental car because I primarily go to locals' joints....but if youre' staying on the strip then there's no reason to drive.      I suspect the crowd will be smaller this year than the last 2.

Make the most of it and have fun !

Funny some of these activities offer best memories.I went during Covid 3 times.i still had nice meals.Gave us opportunity to see other Las Vegas highlights.Day trip to Red Rock,Clark County Museum. To name a few.You already have your rooms.I think I would have booked away from the action.Go in for special events.nevertheless have a a great time.Ope te grandson wins a jackpot.
