I like to have a rental car because I primarily go to locals' joints....but if youre' staying on the strip then there's no reason to drive. The trouble with not driving and staying on the Strip is that you're basically stuck in Gouge Land. You can perhaps get over to the Palms, Gold Coast, and Palace Station.
But the OP realizes that this won't be so much a fun Vegas trip as a family diplomatic mission. His grandson will love it. And there's plenty of kid-friendly stuff on the Strip if you're willing to burn $100 bills.
Parenthetically, it's funny how Vegas keeps oscillating from family-friendly to hardcore money furnace. Lately, it seems like their target demographic is the 21-40 crowd. Sure as hell not us old geezers who tout legendary tales like 3:2:blackjack and free parking.
