Protecting ypur money?

The best thing that I ever purchased was a safe for my house.
I do keep our cash and jewellery in it, but for me the big thing is -
I never used to be able to remember where I put passports, air tickets, travellers cheques, insurance docs, investment tax declarations -
now I know where everything is - it's in the safe! It is a GREAT investment - highly reccommended

I alway use the safe when provided. If the room doesn't have one, I use the safety deposit box at the front desk.

Insert hotel safe story here:

Several decades ago I was a young and dashing police officer protecting the streets of downtown Atlanta. One evening I was called to a room in the Hyatt. A middle aged man reported that two Rolex Presidents had been stolen from him. It seems that he had been entertaining two hookers and when they left he found that his watches were missing.

I did admire his honesty about the hookers. Most men in a similar position report that they were mugged on the street by gangs, driving up the robbery stats making me and the city look bad.

I did wonder and ask why anyone would carry two Rolex Presidents on a trip. He told me that he carried seven! He then opened the safe and pulled out five very real gold Presidents, each with custom dials and diamond bezels.

The moral of the story of course is to keep our entire weeks wardrobe of Rolex in the safe.
I do add that I never had first hand knowledge of anything stolen from a room safe.
Back then (2000, and 2002), we use the Safety Deposit boxes at the hotel.

On one trip, during the LV 2002 stay, we spent two nights (out of six) at the LV Hilton, and they would not let us use their SDB, so we had to use their in room safes.

And you guessed it, we screwed up and forgot the key code combinataion. So we had to call the front office and they sent someone to open if for us.

So yes, they can open them.

Now as to low rollers like us, no one is going to target us, so I think it is no big deal. But knowing how quickly they can open them, I still use travelers checks, and cash out what I need for the day.

I have yet to win big, but if I did, I like the idea someone said about going to the bank and doing a deposit the next day.

Want a nice problem that would be.

And the person that said he hides his money in the slot machines is priceless!

Two years ago we were staying at the Golden Nugget and using the in room safe. The last night of our trip I went to pull my remaining cash when the safe read "ERR"....we tried our 4 digit code and again it read "ERR".
I called the front desk who sent up a maintenance guy with what I am assuming was a security supervisor as he had the hand held radio with an ear piece and was wearing a suit.
The maintenance guy sticks what looks kind of like an "I" phone into the slot on the safe that you would reach into to pull the door open, he pushes a few buttons and viola, the damned thing wont open!
He struggeles with the device for an hour and says things like " looks likesomeones been using this gizmo to play games", and he cant figure out how to get it off the game setting and back to the setting to open my damned safe.
Well of course after these two guys try to get my safe open, the dreaded "shift change" happens and the maintenance guy leaves. I really thought I was screwed at that point.
The night crew maintenance guy shows up with "his" security escort "and a hotel supervisor. Now we have 7 people in the room (just a regular room) trying to get this gizmo to get my damned safe open.
After an hour and a half, a shift change, and about 10 people going in and out of our room, the maintenance guy pushes the gizmo into the slot for the 410 th time and the safe opens!!!
The room arupts with cheers and I finally got my money.
I have thought ever since, if a knowledgable "bad guy" had a room pass key and one of those gizmos, he could rob you blind in under a minute.
I personally, put "some" money in the safe, Hide "some" money in the room, and keep "some" in multiple pockets on my person. I have actually thought of opening a checking account in a national bank just so I didnt have to carry and /or worry about the money I bring.

too damn funny----
Using a front desk safe makes no sense to me.
Everyone within eye shot can see you taking money out.
The one time I used one, the thing seemed so flimsy you could probably have opened it with a bobby pin.
Plus, if you lose the key...
