Had some work done on my car today. Got a bill for $792 dollars which was broken down into parts, labor and....a $35 "shop fee". I guess thats for the free coffee and magazines in the waiting area?

What the... Did you ask about it?
Reminds me of recent medical procedure bills; "clinic fee", in addition to surgeon fee, anesthesia fee, medication fee, equipment fee, supplies fee, billing fee, new speedboat fee, med school tuition fee. Ugh.
Highway robbery.
PJ,that shop fee is for disposable items and chemicals with may include solvents of many sorts.
Shop towels and "other" shop expenses.Lubricants?
That fee should be included as operating expense and be part of the parts and labor charges.
I agree,it shouldn't be a separate fee.
$792 sounds like you had extensive work done on your brakes, maybe a difficult "tune up".
I hate that title. It should be called ignition and fuel service.
Maybe you bought some new tires.
I am a car guy and I don't understand that separate fee, either. It should be INCLUDED.
When I left Sears Automotive,the labor rate was $100 an hour,in 2013.
How about we just call it the "bend over and grab your ankles" fee.
