Riviera

I have visited the Riviera many times over the last 20 years as I tend to like old Vegas (which is why I also always stay on Fremont Street)
The last 5 to 7 years have been almost depressing to go there, in fact back in 2009, one time I swear I was the only patron in the building!
Anyway, thinking the Riviera's demise is imminent, I went there last Thursday for a quick hit at the craps table and hopefully pick up a souvenir coin and do some reminiscing.
I self parked which forced me to walk thru the hotel and by the pool. I was shocked when I walked in to see the waiting line 15 people deep trying to check into the hotel. I was more shocked to see the pool loaded with people (100+) and then when I made it to the casino I had to wait to get on a damned craps table......at 2:00 in the afternoon!
Does the old girl still have a chance?

Maybe it does, we went to the R steakhouse in the middle of January and we had reservations for 8. the place was packed. Who knows, maybe they found a new way to bring in tour groups or people going to conventions.
Seems like the crowd is hit or miss there. I have also frequented the property when it was dead. But the last few times I've gone it was hopping. By strip standards its still one of the most player friendly casinos ...and I think word has got out that their rooms have been refreshed. Their little sportsbook area is a secret gem that few seem to know about. Lots of comfy chairs to watch the game(s).

I was there in April and, on a Friday night, I could not find a parking spot in the self-park garage next to the casino. I was surprised at how busy it was, especially since we had been there a year before and it was like a ghost town. I hope they do manage to survive; I also like the older places. I really miss the Sahara - always had good luck there.

Billiards brings big crowds. Travel sites with 20 dolla strip rooms does the rest. Good luck!
This news is great to hear. I haven't frequented the Riviera often, basically just visiting to play coupons or do promos. Though I am a CET gal, I also have a fondness for older Vegas (I REALLY miss the Stardust and I am pained every time I think of it having been blown up to be replaced by nothing) and really do hope the Riviera survives and prospers. It has a feel that is good for all Vegas visitors that a Cosmo, for example, will never have.
The VNEA used to have their pool (as in, billiards) tournaments at the Riv's Convention Center around that time every year. It started a few days before Memorial Day weekend and ran through the week following it. But I believe they've moved to Bally's so that can't be why it was crowded. Unless they come there for old times sake

I should mention the BCA used to also have their pool tournaments there in early/mid May but has since moved to the Rio in the month of July.
