Smoke

Now that is a great idea!  I'm putting this into play the next time I'm playing next to a smoker.....whether they are being polite or not about it.  :)

But can a smoker actually smell anything? After all, if they retained their sense of smell, they wouldn't have their stink-sticks in the first place, right?

The proper way to deal with an inconsiderate smoker is to beat him to death with a rock.

I can answer that.  My husband was smoking when we married.  I never had.  But I guess love is blind (or blocks the nasal senses), 'cause it didn't bother me.  The first I remember he noticed was when we'd go to Vegas.  He didn't gamble so I was always coming up to the room much later, and he would comment on how awful I smelled from the casino smoke, my clothes, hair, etc.  Still, even in our house I remember the foggy smoke air in our den as we watched TV but it didn't bother me.  Yikes!  After he quit was when the both of us suddenly hated the smell, and couldn't believe we had tolerated it before.

Casino ventilation must be much better now because I don't get that hang-on smell on my clothes and hair like I used to.  And it seems like there are much fewer smokers in casinos than in years past.

Yeah, there are definitely fewer smokers overall, but it's like having only two instead of four guests continually farting at the dinner table. And some casinos, for whatever reason, have far more smokers than others--South Point being one example that I gave.

When I gave up full-time AP'ing, one major reason is that I hated how my hair and clothes smelled after even an hour of casino play. I HAD to take a shower immediately and couldn't stand to wear the same clothes again.

Casino air is somewhat less gross than it used to be, I agree--and yeah, probably due to better ventilation systems. My example is how the old El Corpse used to smell before it got Stationized and revamped. They kind of had to work with what they had, but they did a good job of making it less noxious.

The one good thing about smoking is that it kills smokers. The bad thing is that it does so too slowly to keep them from killing the rest of us.

Downtown report:

QQQQ smoke level is AWFUL on the bank of Jacks in the corner and there's also a higher number of undesirables lurking around this area.   Near the cage it's not too bad in the morning but once they open the full pit then it gets nasty.

Circa is a great spot playing their BP in the birds nest overlooking the sportsbook.   But that damn music volume is insufferable 24/7/365.   Why they can't turn the damn music down during the week in the tmorning after all the posers have stumbled back to their room is beyond me.

GG playable machines are in an area with decent ventilation but it's near the exit doors so...yep...gotta watch your back with the vagrants that pass through.

Plaza isn't the best overall but it's tolerable if you can get a bartop in the morning when it's not too busy yet.

D machines near the coffee spot/hotel registration have awful air quality constantly.   There's some decent games upstairs which are more tolerable but, again, that got damn music is just DEAFENING at all hours of the day.

smEl Cortez's one decent machine is not in a good area.   Air quality sucks and the patrons smoke like chimneys.

Binions decent games back by the Deli has awful air circulation.   There can be a pigarette smoker 50 feet away and that toxic haze will linger forever.   In addition the temperature is frequently far too cold/hot due to that side door.

Cal has a couple decent machines and air quality isn't too bad.   Great spot in the early morning on 10x Tuesdays.

Fremont.  I'll swing by Dunkin for a coffee (app has good deals) and the new section air quality is nice with the high ceilings.   The machine paytables...not so nice.

GNugget.   No clue.   Haven't seen a play here in years so I dont bother to spend time here.

Smokers KNOW they're impacting the health of others around them yet they continue to puff away.  These addicts are just SELFISH AND NASTY.

Yeah, most of these hotels have antiquated ventilation systems and in general, areas that weren't designed to allow nonsmokers to get away from the stinksters. Add the smoke to the intolerably loud music in some of these places, and it makes downtown pretty close to not worth it.

QQQQ is, for whatever reason, one of the stinkiest places in Vegas. I've been there, planning to play a fair amount (like $X coin-in for a promo), and been forced to quit because I was surrounded by people sucking on stink-sticks and sharing their exhaust. Fleeing to Magnolia's for a meal, I returned and found that those smokers had gone away--to be replaced by new ones.

I wonder if any of these casinos realize how much business they lose by allowing unfettered smoking. They probably think that they'd lose more by putting in restrictions. I have to admit that they're probably right--the worst, most addicted, most degenerate gamblers are the most profitable for the casino--and those who can't control their smoking habit are unlikely to be able to control their gambling habit.

But all that aside--people who smoke in public are total assholes.

Great informative response

I used to carry around a cigar when I was in Vegas....not so much because I enjoyed it but because it was the best way to get rid of the old ladies hogging multiple machines or slapping the buttons loudly.    A few puffs in their face would free up the whole row of machines.     Worked like a charm.

Alas, my father died of COPD so I dont touch anything smokable anymore.

Can't more casinos just have a smoking lounge a bit separate from the playing area?  Have not been out there for a few years so was not aware this was still such an issue.  If smoking were banned immediately would they really lose that much business?

It's been tried in the past. Three separate casinos in Nevada tried to be smoke-free and went out of business. Several Vegas casinos have tried nonsmoking areas, but as they're always right next to the smoking-allowed areas, they're kind of pointless. Also, they've tended to put the worst machines in those areas.

Vegas will probably be the last haven of the stink-stick people. It's part of the Nevada "do what you can't do elsewhere" culture.

I don't know what the games are like, but isn't the new area at Plaza non-smoking?
