Social Security Card !

I cant imagine any place "requires" a Social Security card. What if a Canadian wins the jackpot? Or what if you simply lost your Social Security card? Can the casino withhold the winnings? I highly doubt it - even if they say so. I'm not a lawyer but I'm pretty sure if a casino tried to withhold your winnings on the basis of an unavailable SS card you could probably resolve the situation quickly with a modest threat of calling the appropriate gaming authorities.

Besides, its not a good idea to carry your SS Card around with you anyway. Someone stealing your wallet would have everything they need to steal your identity and bypass security into your financial accounts.

Sorry for duplication.

I agree with you, but I can tell you it happened to me, as I described above. I whined and asked to see a supervisor. I told them I have won jackpots in multiple states and never had to show the SS card and that practice is outdated anyway. All to no avail, of course. Fortunately the casino is just a 45 minute drive and we go there from time to time, so it wasn't too big a deal, except to find my SS card which I hadn't used for anything in 30 years!

They would have accepted anything with my SS number on it, such as a Medicare Card, but I didn't have that either. I wasn't in the mood to try calling a gaming authority.

Medicare (I have one now) DOES advise you to carry that card with you, and you are often required to show that card when you get medical care. And it does contain the SS number.

The US Social Security system does not cover Canadians, or any foreigners (like Asians...) for that matter (unless they are employed in the US and the employer takes out SS taxes/wages/whatever it is they take out), so casinos, even in Las Vegas take out a chunk of the jackpot which they do not do for US citizens unless you ask them too. I can't recall if there is a procedure by which foreigners can recover some of it when they get back home.

When my husband applied for a job at a car dealership, he was requied to present his SS card. He had lost it many years prior, so he had to get a new one.

I just remembered that they WOULD have paid me without seeing my SSN, but this required that they take out estimated Federal taxes, in this case $600 or so from a $1300 jackpot, plus the $40 of state tax. Of course I could have gotten most if not all of that at tax time. I declined to go that route and returned later to claim the money.

But at any rate, yes, you can get paid, but if you don't have ID (and in Arkansas that includes something with your SSN on it), they will deduct estimated Federal taxes, and they use the maximum rate regardless of what tax bracket you think you are in.
SS card not required anywhere in US. If you don't carry it with you (who would?), you'll be asked to provide it on a form W-9. This form is an IRS form that serves as an affidavit.

Who has their SS number on a drivers license anymore, in these days of identity theft?

Oh, and it's a Form 8 for non-US citizens.

They can, and will, if you refuse to provide the SS number (not the card). It'll be put into safekeeping until you can provide proper identification, and sign the affidavit attesting that the SS number you provided verbally is correct. I've seen it happen many times, in multiple states. It has nothing to do with Gaming, and everything to do with the Federal Government (er, IRS).
I recently won a jackpot in Vegas and they did ask for SS #. I did not have to show the actual card to them but, was required to give the number.
Never been asked for SSI card, at the very worst if they insisted I would give my SSI number and say put the entire jackpot on my federal taxes, I could wait until the next year.
It's only required for jackpots in excess of $1200 (for slots).
