Spirit and Frontier to Merge

Looks like airfares are going up. The combined company is going to be controlled by Frontier but there is no news on what the name will be.

Having recently flown both, Frontier has the superior product but there are two main areas where Spirit is better.

1. More routes in more markets.

2. The Frontier boarding process is a mess and needs to be fixed. It sucks.

Yeah, remove competition and prices always go up.

Flying Spirit is hell on earth (or in the air above it, I guess), but it's cheap. That's probably going away, though they won't be able to sell their nickel-and-dime-for-everything product at the same price as, say, Southwest.

Pretty soon, discount airlines won't even land at their destinations--you'll just be shoved out the door with a parachute ($500 deposit on the chute in case it doesn't open).

Honestly, I didn't think Spirit was bad. I would fly with them again. Depending on what upgrades you want Spirit is cheaper than Frontier in most markets I look at. For example if you just want to add a single bag Spirit is cheaper. Frontier's pricing pushes you into buying a package that includes a carry-on, checked bag and seat selection if you just want to buy one bag.  I don't need that much luggage.

Frontier has a tiny presence in Indy...but they have some killer sales to Vegas flights historically.    They had some round trips for under $150.    I've never flown on them because I have the Southwest credit card and all the perks that come with that.

Frontier has a huge presence in ST Louis so if I am up for driving I'll chose Frontier over Spirit there. Your Southwest benefits must be good.  I see $65 RT Indy to Vegas on Spirit a lot. That would tempt me.
