Time for a non-smoking casino?

Good luck w/ that
I don't think you'll see this soon. Here in Washington, we did away with smoking in public places a while back. The private mini-casinos (card games only, BJ, LIR etc.) were barely surviving with competition from the full service tribal casinos. When the law took effect, it devistated these operations and even many of the bars that sold pulltabs. A nonsmoking casino in Vegas would be an experiment at best (remember Silver City?). Nevada and LV specifically, are just trying to rebound. To ban smoking now would be a death knel and this comes from a 20 year nonsmoker. I think a good compromise would be more casinos with nonsmoking areas. At least this would offer an option without jumping into the lake headfirst.

Good Luck!

I live in Colorado where they banned smoking in all casinos. I have to admit that I do like it and like the fact that when I go I do not have to worry about my allergies or being bothered by the smoke. That said, the only reason it works is that it is a level playing field and all have to live within the rules. We also do not have a lot of other options nearby so it may not apply. I can't see it flying in Vegas yet although it may come someday.
alot of the casinos here in Oklahoma have non smoking sections and they are packed. I would love to see a Vegas property try nonsmoking. TI is small and could try.

Illinois House votes to lift casino smoking ban

A report by the General Assembly’s Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability characterized the indoor smoking ban as “the biggest contributor” behind a 28-percent decline in casino revenues since January 2008.

That 2010 report also noted casino revenues for Chicago-area casinos dropped by nearly 33 percent since the smoking ban was implemented, while gambling receipts for four neighboring Indiana border casinos fell only .4 percent during that same period.

“Ladies and gentleman, if we’re serious about our budget crisis in Illinois, let’s be real. This is not about the smoking issue. This is about the money,” said Rep. Dan Burke (D-Chicago), the bill’s House sponsor.

Burke said the smoking prohibition has cost the state $800 million in lost casino-tax revenues since the imposition of the ban.

In a perfect world. Well for me anyway it would happen. But as the previous post shows what happened in our state IL. So as far as happening in LV that is not a bet you would want to take.

I am just glad they did ban it in restaurants there.

I don't know. LOL

However, in the last 2 or 3 years I have seen less and less smokers in LV.

In fact, it's not unusual for me to sit at a table
and play cards for many hours and none ever sits in.

I find smokers to be nice people.

I mean, when they appear, I don't feel the urge
to drive a stake through their hearts or anything.

My guest is non-smoking casinos in LV are
many years away.

I know Sue Casey wants one badly.
I live in NC in what was once one of the largest tobacco producing counties in the US. Two years ago NC banned smoking in all bars and restaurants. This bill was passed at the urging of the NC Bar and Restaurant Assoc. Doing it this away put everyone on the same playing field. In SC they do it by town/city. Even with competition from neighboring towns no town has rescinded their ban, this suggest that the impact in neutral or advantageous.

One thing that has emerged is that nonsmokers are now seldom or never around smokers. THis tends to make one hyper sensitive to cig. smoke. THis could force casinos to make more efforts to ban or cordon off smoking areas. At some point employee law suits will end this but in the meantime I wish more casinos would segerate the 20% who smoke and upgrade their ventilation systems.
I would love to see it but doubt it will happen.
It would be nice if they would have to designate a section of table games and the slot floor non smoking.
Atlantic City has made some progress in this area.
It would be cool, but this will never happen in a long time. I don't mind it. Thing is, when I go to Vegas, it actually feels like I am in the USA again, compared to being in California.
