Time for a non-smoking casino?

In Arizona, casinos are one of the few "public" places where one can smoke inside. Everywhere else is outside and as Nichole mentioned many restaurants/clubs have adapted. Very strict DUI laws, IMHO, have contributed to a decrease in bar revenue, not 'no smoking' mandates. In the last year or so, I've noticed less people smoking in casinos and Ak-Chin seems less smokey to me.

I'm a non-smoker and accept people smoke in casinos. However, I would patronize a non-smoking casino if one were available.

I am not going to call anyone stupid or ignorant...but here are the facts...and you can decide for yourself.

Smoke free casinos have existed, in the past, and some still exist, but they go bust, then go back to allowing smoking again.

Why?

Becuase these so-called 3 in 4 people that do NOT smoke...keep going back to the smoking casinos (to complain, and belly ache) and they don't bother going to the non-smoking ones.

If smoking bothers so many people so much...wouldn't they be able to change the way some of these casinos operate? Since only one of four adults smoke...that means that surely they have the majority

If this "non-smoking majority" banned or boycotted casinos until they changed to ALL non-smoking, or if they simply give all of their business to the non-smoking casinos...this wouldn't even be an issue. Non-smokers would win.

But noooo ....That would be too easy....Instead, they just prefer to give all their money to the smoke-casinos, while the non-smoking ones sits over there, empty with clean air that no one gives a crap about.

Real genius, if you ask me!

Again..I am not saying that everyone does this...but the majority of the non-smokers sure do, because if they didn't...things would be different.

I frequently see people smoke in the non smoking areas of AK-Chin and Talking Stick. I also don't bitch about people smoking in casinos.
if there were a 'non smoking casino just sitting over there' i would certainly go to it and spend much more of my time and money in that caino than in all the others. As it is now, I am considering driving for 5+ hours to visit a non smoking casino when there are 9 others within an hour of my driveway.

Because the same sort of stupidity that causes many people to smoke also causes many people to be terrible at gambling.

If you're stupid, you're much more likely to be a smoker.

And, if you're stupid, you're also much more likely to be terrible at gambling.

Casinos don't particularly like smokers. But casinos love people who are terrible at gambling, and work very hard to get terrible gamblers in the front door. And so, as a byproduct, casinos also wind up choked with lots of smokers.

The big, fancy casinos got big and fancy by successfully attracting terrible gamblers, who are disproportionately smokers.

Almost all nonsmokers prefer smoke-free environments. However, for most nonsmokers, that preference isn't so strong that they're willing to travel very far from their preferred big, fancy casino to gamble in a nonsmoking casino. And so you find nonsmokers shoulder to shoulder with smokers in big, fancy casinos.

That's just how it is.

Really? I assume the comments are anecdotal and your opinion. If not, I'd love to see the stats that support those assertions.

I personally think Rizzo nailed it. Remember that the question from the OP was whether or not Vegas could/would support a non-smoking casino. It's been tried and it has failed.

As a herein defined "smart non-smoker" for me it comes down to game offerings. If a non-smoking casino offered equal to or better games, that's where I'd play and vice versa. That may not be important to all but it is to me.

Being a "Never Smoked" person, I must be a Genius. Come to think of it, I am. If there were two casinos right next door to each other, offered the same gaming options and one was non-smoking and the other was smoking, I would go to the non-smoking casino. I think Vegas would support a non-smoking casino as long as the location was convenient and the gaming was comparable to the smoking casinos.

Scientists have, for the first time, linked smoking with impaired mental agility in a study which shows that the habit can reduce a person’s IQ by up to 3%. They claim this dip is enough to affect smokers’ quality of life, making them less efficient at performing everyday tasks such as counting change or doing crossword puzzles.

“The impact of smoking on the IQ of the people involved may appear small but it will impair their quality of life. They will experience niggly problems with any task that requires some sort of mental agility — whether that’s organising their daily life, remembering what to buy at the shops, doing crossword puzzles or playing bridge."

Times (London), December 5, 2004, citing Current Directions in Psychological Science February 2004 13: 1-4.

Casinos are run by bright people. They know that smokers are easier marks, that on balance they're worse at gambling. That's why they entice them with smoking-friendly environments.
Princess, Carnival, and Holland America cruise lines (all owned by Carnival) have just announced that, come winter, they'll ban smoking in all cabins of their fleet. They're also announcing additional smoking limitations on cabin balconies, bars, and the like.

They're also going to limit casino smoking. None is banning it.
