All casinos in Ontario, Canada are smoke free. I forget exactly when that law came into effect. Every casino had to build a designated smoking building. They're all still profitable albeit government run. When the entire playing field is level, it is viable. I think that's why in Atlantic City, they are trying to make the casinos smoke free all at once.
In Las Vegas, casinos do not want to exclude anybody who has money to gamble, smoker or non-smoker.
I think a trial run with an enclosed designated non-smoking area within the casino would be a good start though. They could put up some temporary walls to cordon off a large section of the casino to keep smoke out and then advertise it to the public. I'm sure they would have a way to measure revenue and foot traffic through that area to determine if it was successful.
