Time for a non-smoking casino?

All casinos in Ontario, Canada are smoke free. I forget exactly when that law came into effect. Every casino had to build a designated smoking building. They're all still profitable albeit government run. When the entire playing field is level, it is viable. I think that's why in Atlantic City, they are trying to make the casinos smoke free all at once.

In Las Vegas, casinos do not want to exclude anybody who has money to gamble, smoker or non-smoker.

I think a trial run with an enclosed designated non-smoking area within the casino would be a good start though. They could put up some temporary walls to cordon off a large section of the casino to keep smoke out and then advertise it to the public. I'm sure they would have a way to measure revenue and foot traffic through that area to determine if it was successful.

I've been smoking for 50+ years. I do the NY Times crossword puzzle in ink. There is nothing wrong with my "mental agility." I am detail-oriented and organized, and I keep neat files of everything involved in running my life and finances, and taking care of my home and bills. I read books and do jigsaw puzzles. I am definitely NOT stupid.

"That's just how it is. "
Sue, you just have to face the facts. Chilcoot must be right. I can't wait to tell Barb she's stupid and get away with it....I'm sure she'll understand

On a different but related matter, you might be interested in knowing that there was a study done by the Thule Institute of the University of Oulu in Finland on "Human cold exposure, adaptation and performance in a northern climate".

It states: "The purpose of the study was to examine the amount of cold exposure and factors affecting it at the population level in Finland, to determine what type of cold acclimatisation, if any, develops in urban
residents in winter, and to find out whether cold acclimatisation or acclimation has a functional
significance on psychological or physical performance."

An abstract of the study concluded that: "Simple cognitive tasks were impaired in cold, and in
complex tasks both negative, positive and mixed effects were observed. It is suggested that cold
exposure affects cognition through different mechanisms related to either distraction or arousal. Cold
exposure increased postural sway by 70-90%, suggesting impaired postural control."

It may not be a total surprise that Alaska is the coldest State with a mean annual temperature of 32.13 degrees F. Would it be fair to say that people from there are stupid and sway like Webles or is it only selective ones on LVA?

Obviously this explains why people from northern states get more casino mailers than people down south. Makes sense, right?

Wait....what was the original question?

It takes all kinds.....

Dan
Well, that would explain Palin, Dan.

BTW, it's been my experience that people who think they know everything -- don't.

Well my best friend got a free ride to Stanford and is now a professor. He smokes two packs a day. Guess he's stupid too.

So funny making the holier than thou look STUPID!
I think that many smokers (not all) have addictive personalities which would explain their gambling habits. You can find both smart and stupid people who fall into the smoker or non-smoker population. I am guessing that two key groups for the casino (not including high rollers) are:

1) Stupid gamblers (both smoking and non-smoking)

2) Addictive gamblers (both smoking and non-smoking with a large % of those being smokers)

Of course, these aren't mutually exclusive so stupid and addictive would be the Daily Double for the casino.

Sue, does this seem logical to you?
I was at RR a couple of years ago where I first saw smoking and non-smoking sections in a casino. The funny thing was that on one side of a bank of slots it was a non-smoking section but on the other side of the bank it was a smoking section. So the smoke from the smoking side wafted over to the non-smoking side, so it did no good what so ever. I think you will see more smoking/non-smoking sections or whole wings of a casino floor being designated as non-smoking before we will ever see Vegas make the leap to a completely non-smoking casino. Unless a major property sticks its neck out and makes their casino totally non-smoking and if it draws gamblers in and becomes real popular then the rest of the properties wont be able to make their casinos non-smoking fast enough.
The federal government has just released the nine new images that'll begin appearing on the top half of cigarette packagages beginning next year.

Maybe these'll get through to those sad stragglers who still smoke. Smoking remains the US's leading cause of preventable death, killing 443,000 Americans a year, or roughly one self-inflicted, 9/11-sized death blow every 59 hours.
Wow, I hope those images do help some people and thanks for posting them. I feel fortunate to never have smoked and never will but I don't want to judge those that do.
