To rent a car or not to rent a car.....

We have always rented one for the last 16 years. As long as eventually I can get a decent price which I finally did want to be mobile. So I would not do the bus thing so it would be cabs or shuttles. And without I would for sure go less places. So for 4 days plus going back to the AP on day five I find the $105 with fees well worth it. And at my home casino South Point I always self park. But usually valet when out visiting.

So as jjjj said if one the strip maybe not but for the farther out places a plus.

we always rent a car. even though it gets more expensive each year, it is invaluable. once you learn the side streets and back ways into casinos you avoid the traffic. there are a lot of nice off strip casinos you could miss without a car (m,red rock, gvr, aliante). we make it kind of a challenge to go around a find good v.p. and use lva and acg coupons.
I've rented ten of the last eleven trips, and even though that was only a three day trip I missed not having a car that one.
Always, always, always rent the the cheapest model- you can get a yard upgrade for $10 or $20 any time. This last trip I rented an economy car and for $20 got fifteen days use of a Charger.
We have been going for 25 yrs and have never rented a car.We like the Strip and go downtown once a trip. I love just grabbing a cab which I find easier and I feel like I am on vacation. Also ,we like to have a few so driving would not be a good idea.We use Presidential Limo to and from airport and love the feeling of meeting them in baggage claim and once in Limo I "feel" like I am in Vegas.Everyone does what works for them but this works for us.Have fun either way,Manny

The decision should be pretty easy to make. Compare the cost of the rental car vs the estimated cost of your cabs/public transportation fares - and then pick the one thats cheaper.

Different people will have a different result. For me renting a car is always cheaper.
I've found it easier to get somewhere when I'm drunk and in a cab than when I'm driving down a crowded sidewalk.
Outlet Malls??? Really? Really?
If you go through National Car Rental and book a compact car you can get a car up to a full size for the same price. If the rate you get is good it's way better to rent a car. Even if you only use it to get to and from the airport and a couple side trips. Have you priced the cabs in Vegas. They're outrageous.

Never go down the strip. Especially at night. Unless you want to sit in a parking lot. Take Koval, Paradise or Industrial North and South. Then get off at the closest cross street to where your going.

If you have an entertainment book use the coupons in there for rentals.

Hope this helped.
I prefer to rent a car because of the savings. I always travel with 3 or more people and the savings on cab fare alone makes the rental car a good deal. With the car, we enjoy traveling to off strip properties and downtown.
The car ends up paying for itself I think by going off the strip to play and eat. If it is around $25 a day plus gas I think it is worth it because a daily unlimited bus ticket for 2 people is about $10.

The public transportation is bad I find and buses only come about every 20-30 minutes even on the big routes like Flamingo and Tropicana. The Strip bus I find is used by people who never have been on a bus before and they think they are going on Space Mountain. Did you ever watch how long it takes people to board the strip bus? Stand at the Venetian one afternoon for a few minutes and you will see what I mean...

Whenever I get into a cab it is always around $20 for a quick ride even.

From time to time if I have an odd number of days like 9 and if I am staying on the strip I will rent a car for the week and tough if out for a couple of days.

I try to keep track of those days I have a car and did not need one and find that 90 % of the time I use the car when I have one.

I always park myself and walk. This is my excersise program while there and causes a natural break of at least 1 hour between properties for me which enforces my "sessions" money management.
