Venetian caught scamming patrons?

Vegas Chatter just posed a very interesting story. If you take cabs to get around Vegas then you must read!!!

https://www.vegaschatter.com/story/2014/7/17/6036/69518/vegas-travel/Sigh%2C+Another+Vegas+Taxi+Scam+To+Look+Out+For
Pretty funny. What exactly is the job description of those people, anyway? The cabs are already there....and the people are already in line? Do we really need some low level douche in a cheap suit to wave the next cab over? The next cab cant figure that out himself?

Glad I rent a car =)
That article came out last year some time, Champ.
See the disclaimer at the end. Venetian management was aware and would investigate.

Is it still happening?

Sounds like a ruse cooked up by an individual (idiotic) employee.

I've heard that those doorman jobs are highly prized.

They make, what, at least $10-20 a MINUTE on average in tips?

So it would surprise me that one would be stupid enough to jeopardize his job with that kind of shenanigans.

You are joking about the tips?

No, Champ, not joking.

Those guys, (referred to as cab "loaders" in the article) load roughly 10 or more parties a minute, maybe more during busy times (after shows, morning departures to airport, etc.).

Many people tip at least one dollar or more. I'm sure some don't tip, but it is customary. I don't know if they are salaried, minimum wage, or what at baseline.

If you stay at one or two hotels routinely, and use taxis, you will see the same ones there year after year.

There used to be an old-looking (maybe not so old?) 'doorman' at LVH years ago. He had the deepest resonate voice, instructing the taxi driver "Bellllaaagiiooooo" or where ever the passenger is to be taken. I was told he had been doing that for decades and how those jobs are prized because of how much they make in tips. Like dealers at a high end place. Minimum wage, six figure income, the honest way. At that time, LVH was in its heyday.
Wow!!!
Yeah, on a busy night they load people in as fast as they can. Everyone hands them a buck or two. Unless you have luggage they move a line quickly after a show, and I'm sure make a bundle.
There's no doubt it's a scam. I have shared this story before, but I will do it again. I was in a long line at the Strat many years back and I was watching the "Loaders" put patrons into cabs. I then noticed a pattern. If somebody did not tip, the loader slapped the top of the cab twice. If the patron did tip, he did slapped it once. Now, I thought this was a coincidence, but after watching for about 10 mins (... yes, the cab line was super long). It appeared that this form of communication was being used by all loaders. ----- By the way, the money these Loaders were taking in was INCREDIBLE! Now I know why it such a coveted gig.

So, when I got into the cab and I choose not tip. Of course, there were 2 slaps on the roof of the cab. I was going to The Golden Nugget and hence I was quite familiar with the shortest way. Well, the cabbie choose to take some back-ass way through the rough part behind the Strat. I then asked him firstly, why are we taking this way. He responded with "... this is the fastest". Well, I quickly responded with "... Main Street would have been the fastest and I believe you are long hauling me". Then I asked him about the 2 slaps on the cab roof. He was simply stunned as if I almost secretly discovered the Mason's secret handshake. While he did not deny or agree with my theory, his body language told the story.

Yet.... another reason to rent a car.

A knowledgable taxi rider need not fear these issues.

Get in the cab, have an idea of the good route, find a way to show the driver you know your way around, and you'll be fine.

BTW, on some busy nights, taking those crummy streets behind the Strat for a couple blocks until you can get onto Main Street can be a good idea.
Trust me Chilcoot, I know my way around Vegas and the cabbie was certainly trying to long haul me! I hate to say this, but the long - haul was VERY common on the majority of the trips I took with cabbies. I had to "suggest the best way" to get to most of my destinations.

".... Oh, you would like to go to Ballys (from The Gold Coast).... let's go around China Town" says the cabbie.... WTF???? I respond with...."No, lets just take the short way and just go on Flamingo across the I-15 and the strip"

He smiles at me and says ".... oh yah, I forgot about going that way"
