We got long hauled !!

Last time I was in Vegas I told the driver what rout I wanted him to take and he was very nice about it. Taking Las Vegas Blvd would have been a waste of my money and time. You were right to reward the honest driver.
I have also gone to renting a car after several bad cab rides. I shop around and usually find great deals and I have been enjoying exploring the rest of Las Vegas. The rental car facility is great if you join the companies programs, free, and get to skip the counter.
Longhauling plainly occurs. But in the (approximately )50-75 cab rides I've taken in Vegas over the years, it hasn't happened to me. Not once.

If I'm doing anything right, it's telling the driver how I'd like to make the trip the moment I get in. Like, from the airport to downtown, I'll tell them to take Swenson over to Paradise and then up Las Vegas Blvd. I suspect that, when they think you know your way around town, they figure it's not worth trying to longhaul.

Maybe someday I'll get to make a call to the Taxicab Authority, it sounds kind of empowering. But the damn cabbies just don't longhaul me!
Damn... I know my way around town and for some reason I seem to get the greasy cabbies who always try to long haul me. I have to instruct them how to get to my destination using the shortest and most economical trip.

We stay at Ballys more than any other. I give the driver specific instructions (via Paradise) & the fare is usually around $20. Every taxi fare site/resource I look at puts it around $20-23.
You weren't long hauled. (did you go through the tunnel & get on the freeway? That is long hauled)
No we ended up about 1 mile south past the old terribles on Flamingo Rd. we sat at at least 6 long lights. I'm sorry it doesn't take over 25 minutes from the airport ! We were long hauled !
I have taken cabs to Bally's and the fare is usually just under $20. Vegas lights are very long, and sitting time adds up.

We used to take a shuttle from the airport to the hotel, but after going downtown first and making our way back to Bally's, never again. The difference has proven to be less than $4. Plus, don't forget the airport surcharge adds about $3.50 to the fare. It is always cheaper going from the hotel to the airport.

Joy
If $22 from the airport to Bally's is a "longhaul", that cabbie is the worst longhauler ever. Someone needs to talk to him, tell him how it's done.

BTW, if you really were "1 mile south past the old terribles on Flamingo Rd.", you'll find yourself still on the airport, pretty much right on the blast pad for runway 19L. More likely you were heading west on Tropicana or Harmon, which are very good places for someone trying to quickly get from the airport to Bally's to be.

I suspect this "foreign" driver with "his Ethiopian music" never had a chance with you, those are revealing details to add.
I've never told a taxi driver how to go, and never been long hauled or otherwise cheated that I was aware of.

Last week we cabbed from airport to Wynn to drop friend off, then to Bellagio.
About 9 PM on a Tuesday.

Airport to Wynn was pretty fast, around $10+ on the meter.
Wynn to Bellagio was bumper to bumper traffic on the Strip, seemed like forever.
The entire fare, airport to Wynn to Bellagio was $22. I thought that was pretty good.

Driver said he waas from Yugoslavia, chatty as hell the whole time but very friendly.
At least you weren't keelhauled.
