What is a Dotty's?

Interesting article in todays LVRJ regarding Dotty's. There are 22 in clark county and the county can not decide how to regulate them as they fall into a grey area as to classification. As they seem to be a successful gambling operation I was curious if anyone knew anything about them. I have never noticed them in my many visits to Vegas.

I've never noticed them, either, and I've lived here 5 years, lol.
Dotty's are all over the valley. They are little establishments with slant top slot machines. They serve beverages and snack food but little else. It's a place to go for smokers (you can't walk in an out for one minute without your clothes reeking of smoke). The slot machines are the multi-game variety (Video Poker, Double Bucks, Black Rhino etc.). The reason you may not see them is that they are not near the strip, but all over the valley otherwise. There is one right across the street from M Resort and you can see them every 5 or six blocks in the west end of the valley.

There's a Dotty's in Sparks too, near across from the Nugget. It's a slots only parlor, with bad games, bad atmosphere, a slot club that's surely bad, and a snack bar with aspirations of someday being as good as an AM/PM.

Are they owned by Sheldon?

On our last trip to Vegas, I was wearing some brand new shoes (bad idea), and really needed to buy some gel insoles. I was on the lookout for a Target/Wal-Mart/etc. and we stopped at a K-Mart that we were driving past. Inside we laughed because even at K-Mart there were slot machines.

...and, if you look closely in the picture (green arrow), the slot room there was a "Dotty's".
This is surprising I will now watch for them just for the heck of it.

We try to go there at least once every time we are in the Valley. It is an experience no Strip or Native American property can recreate. Mostly small screen penny and nickel machines. A "bar" area that looks like grandma's kitchen, with staff that looks like grandpa or grandma.

I remember vividly the first time I went to one on Boulder near Boulder Station. It was about 3 in the morning, had to be buzzed in. Place full of large biker types with big beards, all playing friendly little penny machines with cartoon like ducks and multiplying gopher wild symbols. A white haired women with a bun serving beer in bottles right from the fridge. Rough looking crowd, but very quiet, everyone minding their own business.

This may not be everyone's favorite kind of place, but if you want something different from the usual scene this is it. They even have a club, and will send you offers to your home. You may have friends back home who have Total Rewards cards, but I bet they won't have a Dottys card!
The new "Gambling With An Edge" radio show with Bob Dancer and Frank Kneeland has Dotty's as one of their sponsors and supposedly there is some decent enough VP at the $1 and up level which in combination with their Slot Club and mailed offers makes some of the games decent enough.

Also, the locations in K-Mart stores are completely non-smoking, so Dancer says that his wife plays there.

I've seen a few around Vegas on the outskirts............some are New-Looking.
The one in Sparks would fit in the old, Dive catergory.
Not my cup of tea. But different strokes.......
