Your First Vegas memories?

I was 18 and moving to Seattle with a Friend for supposedly good jobs. That jobs never paned out. Anyways I think it was 1984 and we stayed at some motel on the strip close to Bob Stupak’s Vegas World.

My first time gambling. Did not have much money, but played a few quarters and hit something small, around $ 40.00 bucks. I felt like I had won a million. Not knowing that you could cash in the change for bills, I stuffed all those quarters into my front pant pockets and “clinked” all the way back to my motel.

We were only in town for one night, so we drove down to the Silver Slipper and that was my first experience playing black jack. I remember how embarrassed I was when the dealer informed me “ sir, we don’t say Hit Me!, we just move the cards towards you”.

I saw Ceasers Palace for the first time, saw the fountains and thought Wow!, that’s were Evel Knievel jumped over them. He was one of my childhood hero’s.

The First Time I was Legal.

Was 1988. Drove from Houston, Texas with my older brother. Went during December and drove through snow for the first time in my life. I remember the hypnotic effect it had on us while driving in it at night.

We did not make reservations and ended up staying at the El Rancho for one night, then Circus Circus for three nights, then Palace Station for the last three.

I remember my bankroll was $ 300.00 for the whole trip, but we had a blast. I remember the cocktail waitresses brining drinks really fast, not like today. I remember playing the Sigma Derby machine and drinking 27 bloody mary’s.

I remember getting up in the morning and going into Slots of Fun with a hangover and having a 75 cent Corona and 1$jumbo hot dog for breakfast.

I remember me and my brother eating a buffet for the first time, it was at Circus Circus and yes at that time we thought it was a five start restaurant. I remember we pilled our plates as high with food as we could because we thought it was all you could eat but you had to get what you wanted all on one tripJ.

I remember we ate a $9.99 steak and lobster dinner at the Stardust. I remember seeing the Stardust sports book for the first time and being in awe. I made a bet and they gave me a free Stardust sports book cap. ( I still have it).

I remember playing at Silver City, Westward Ho, the Riviera. I remember we drove downtown and went through the Ripley’s Believe it or not museum at the Four Queens.
I remember walking up and down the strip and never getting tired like I do now.

I remember going to the Landmark casino and playing $2 blackjack and hitting on 17 because I felt lucky that I would get a 4, and I did. Good thing I was the only one at the table, probably would have pissed someone off.

Anyways those are some of my early Vegas memories. Did not have much money back then, but it was some of the most fun I have had in Las Vegas.

What’s your early memories.
Flying in at night the first ever Vegas trip 1987...the lights...awesome.

The Little Caesars casino...what a dive, in a little strip mall about where Paris is now. Think Vegas Vacation, where they had games like Guess Which Hand, Rock Paper Scissors, etc. Except much, much creepier.
My first trip December 26, 1989, 21 yrs old, I was on a junket with my uncles company. We stayed at the Frontier and we each had a card that allowed us to eat in any restraunt and order anything we wanted. I remember ordering room service and eating my first shrimp cocktail with my brother looking out the window at the Desert Inn as the lights on the strip came on. I stayed awake for 60 hours without sleep. I walked to the Dunes by myself on Sunday morning and started playing blackjack and met a gentelman from El Paso,TX and he ended up inviting me to the champaign brunch with him and his family. I remember seeing my frist homeless person sleeping on the steps of the courthouse as we went downtown. I wish the Las Vegas of today was more like is was back then, a place where they actually appreciated customers and you didnt have to pay $12 for a drink at the pool..
1988 I went with my stepmom and a group of travel agents from Texas with their American Airlines rep. It was rare that they got freebies they could give away so when this trip came up, she called me and I drove to Corpus and flew out with her. We flew first class on American to Dallas, then changed planes to Vegas. We were there 3 nights, stayed @ Flamingo. They had some shows set up for us, we had a dinner show @ Trop, Folies Bergere (sp?) one night, the next night Blood Sweat and Tears and David Copperfield @ Caesars Circus Maximus. We spent one afternoon checking out hotel rooms so she could recommend them to clients. We went to the Maxim (remember, behind Bill's?) and several others. Caesars wouldn't let us go into any rooms, they just showed us pictures that looked like they were taken in the 70's. We rented a car and went to the Ethel M chocolate factory and cactus garden. We took the Liberace museum tour and the guy @ the museum told us how to find Liberace's house so we went by and I had my pix taken in front of the gate (I was a piano player growing up so I was thrilled).
Didn't do too much gambling, stepmom doesn't gamble but I took a couple of hundred with me to play. I remember playing a quarter machine called balloon bars. I don't recall winning much. I do miss that sound of clinking coins.
We got to fly first class again, this time from Vegas to Dallas. Randy Travis was a few rows in front of me. When we got off the plane my stepmom asked if I saw Hank Williams Jr on the plane. I told her right genre, wrong musician.

There still are some places that have coin-dropping machines.

The D has some stuff upstairs (including Sigma Derby), El Cortez has some stuff in the back, and I know that at least upstairs, Cal has old Quarter 9/6 Jacks Or Better coin droppers that actually drop coins whenever you hit anything that pays anything (including for a pair of Jacks Or Better).

And, if I'm remembering correctly, Alliente has a section with some retro coin dropping games.

The first time i heard the sound of 18 silver coins hitting the hopper on a $1.00 machine when you hit three bells. The sound is still there today.............
I was 21 in the late 70's, cross country family trip. Stayed at Circus-Circus 3 nights, James Bond Diamonds are Forever Movie had recently come out so it was cool being in that casino.

Went to see Folies Bergere at the Trop.... all those topless girls on stage bouncing around, me 21 with raging hormones and my grandmother sitting beside me.... was a very uncomfortable situation for me.
It was 1991. Went with two of my friends from back in high school days over Columbus Day weekend, six days total. Stayed two nights each at Excalibur, Maxim and Flamingo. Actually thought the Excalibur buffet was awesome.

Must have gone into every single casino on the Strip back then, including many that are now long gone like the fabled Sands and Dunes in addition to the Stardust, of course. And yes Little Caesars also. Will never forget Vegas World with that rediculously small back parking lot featuring potholes like moon craters.

Didn't know at the time that slots was a losing propostion but played the bandits at Circus Circus and won $50 in nickels. That's 1000 coins people. You never know how heavy that is until you're carrying the coin buckets across the casino to the cage. Totally awed by the Las Vegas Hilton SuperBook

Saw 6 shows in 6 nights, from "Enter the Night" to some very *ahem* adult entertainment. The trip that started a love affair with the REAL city that never sleeps.

20 years ago, I attended a School Board convention in Vegas and stayed at the Las Vegas Hilton since it connected to the convention center. Never gambled before. Sat down at a $10 blackjack table and had no idea how to play. My fellow school board travelling companion and I must have really ticked off everyone at the table with our stupidity. Played a red, white and blue machine, one coin in, and hit the jackpot, which of course only paid $700 with one quarter in. What did I know then about always play max bet?
Returned the following year for another convention and stayed at Caesars. I thought it was the most glamorous place ever, compared to the Hilton the previous year.
Early 90's attended Texas Agents Convention, stayed at the Mirage it was magnificent, saw the Righteous Brothers at the Desert Inn. Went to numerous casinos including Ceasars, Golden Nugget, Circus Circus. I completely fell in love with the city of Las Vegas.

Since that time have returned in excess of 50 times, including getting married for the second time Sept 29, 2001. Wife and I will be in Vegas April 2, wow I still love Vegas.
