Your First Vegas memories?

My first trip was 1989. We took my mother, who was mourning the loss of my father in March. We flew in on Halloween night - people were not surprised I was flying through the air on that night, and said so.

We stayed at Ballys, booked at a very inflated cost by a travel agent, but we had no experience so we thought we had a deal.

I remember sneaking out of the room at 3 AM and leaving a note that they would find me in the casino playing craps. When my mother woke up, we went to the Keno parlor and ordered Screwdrivers - at 6 AM. We had a great time, and I am always so glad that we took her on that trip with us, as she had never flown on a plane before, and none of us had ever been to Vegas, although we spent many weekends in Atlantic City. Mom passed away in 1993, but I have my memories of the great time we had.

We now try to visit Vegas twice a year, October and April, for the good weather and the good times. Of course, now we stay in comped rooms and I shop on line for airfare deals. We arrive on 4/16 and I am counting down the days....

I was about 19 years old and staying with my parents at the Riviera. I still vividly remember the big "R" embroidered on the red bed spreads along with the funky red/black carpet combination.
1990, fresh out of my first divorce......no memories......
We arrived in Las Vegas in the late evening hours and stayed at the Riviera. I remember waiting and playing all night at the Riviera and being so excited when it was finally light out so we could "safely" go out and explore.

Also, my mother, who had been to Vegas in the late 1970s/early 1980s had told me that it was appropriate to tip the waitress a quarter for your drink. You should have seen that lady's face when I proudly accepted my first drink and plopped a quarter on her tray.

First trip, Aug. 12, 1991 and nothing can top the anticipation waiting to leave for the airport. Played blackjack in some Strip casino and got clobbered because I had no idea of the rules or strategy. Almost suffocated in a bus riding down the Strip...before they were all air conditioned.

Right around Christmas 1975. I had just recently turned 18 and went with a friend from college and his sister. Stayed at the Union Plaza (now the Plaza). Stayed mostly downtown. Although neith my friend or I had a great desire, my friend's sister (a couple years older than us) insisted we go to our first strip club - the Girls of Glitter Gulch. The "dancers" looked bored beyond belief and it was so boring I would not return to a strip club for maybe 20 years (but times since then have been much different and certainly more exciting, if expensive). Loved walking around with pockets full of silver dollars. We really did not check out the strip, but I fell in love with the city anyway.
Around 1985, 3 of us from Phoenix traveled up to vegas with a pact, that if anyone
of us won enuf for a room we would spend the night, we left very early on a Sat. morning
to eat at the much advertised 99 cent breakfast Barfett at the CircusCircus, on our way
through the Casino, my buddy Ron put in " 1" quarter into a slot and won $250 , we all
cheered ,and that win garnered our night stay, which cost between $30 and $40 at the Dunes.
I wonder to this day what he would have won if he put in 3 quarters ?
Wonderful stories all.
Lee and durham, I bet most of us have at least one "1 coin" story haunting us forever...LOL.

Well I'm fortunate that I'm not one of them. I was told early on that you really never should only bet one coin (unless maybe the top jackpot was proportionately the same no matter how many coins you bet).

Spring of 1975....drove non-stop with a friend of mine from Wisconsin to Las Vegas in his brand new Corvette. I remember having that sucker up to 135 MPH driving across Arizona. My first memory of Vegas was coming up over a rise and seeing the lights of Las Vegas off in the distance. It was like an island of neon off in the darkness of the desert. The next afternoon I was sitting at the bar at the Golden Gate, having a shrimp cocktail and a cold bottle of Coors....Top of the world, Ma!! Cost me one dollar. Remember watching and betting on the Jai Alai matches at the old MGM Grand (now Bally's). Watched in disbelief as a guy was betting $100 a hand at a blackjack table at the Desert Inn. Lost 5 hands in a row...that was two weeks pay for me back then! Saw at least half a dozen Rolls Royces during that trip. Almost went blind staring at all of the gorgeous women.(some things never change)

Glasses can affect your vision; especially when they have been emptied several times...............
