Palace Station or the D?

After many consecutive stays on the strip I want to try something different. Going budget this time, so debating between off-strip or downtown. The D is about $100 more in total then Palace Station, but I'll have all of downtown to explore (haven't been in years). I'm guessing a stay at PS would be a different experience (locals hotel), and I hear there is a shuttle to the strip if I feel the urge. Since I never stayed at either I welcome any opinions from this board. Fyi, I checked other hotels and for some reason they are all more expensive ($100/nt for Fremont, really?) on the dates I'm going.
Sounds like you dont have a rental car so I would definitely pick downtown. More to do. And since you obviously are a paid member you will get plenty of good coupon action.

Look at the El COrtez cabana suites...I've never seen them eclipse the $100 mark except on New Years Eve.

Palace Station has an awesome Oyster Bar and a good craps game...and its in close proximity to In-N-Out Burger and Capriotti's. But I think you would get bored there by day 3.
Thanks pjstroh, you make some very good points, and are very perceptive, as I don't have a rental car. I usually forego that as I stay on the strip and admit to indulging in the adult beverage. I'll be up there 5 days, so your last sentence resonates as well. I'll look at El Cortez also. Thanks!
I like Palace Station having stayed there several times and will be again in Nov. I don't rent a car but the Sahara Express (SX) can be caught on Sahara and LV Blvd. and it's about 10 minutes max from there to Palace Station. The SX comes about every 20 minutes during the day. Palace Station has a shuttle also to and from the airport and to and from Fashion Show Mall. I usually stay downtown (GN) but chose Palace Station for this trip for significant price savings on a weekend. The tower rooms are better than the courtyard rooms and the oyster bar is terrific.

Without a doubt, I would stay downtown. The D is certainly not the Taj Mahal, but on every corner is a live band, the action is endless and if you're doing bad at one casino, it's only a short walk to the next casino.
Stay away from the Courtyard Rooms they are more of a cheap motel feel. The Tower rooms are the only way to go they are still a great value.
