I, for one, used to enjoy staying at the Vegas Club. No, the rooms were nothing to write home about, but room comps were ridiculously easy, I liked both the Upper Deck and the Great Moments Room, and I just liked the place. And I used to enjoy playing blackjack at the Plaza, especially when they had the double deck game with the dealer standing on soft 17.
Then like lots of people, I grew dismayed when the current owners of both places let them go in the tank. Like a lot of people, I figured they were going to turn them into condos until that bubble burst.
I won't even walk through the Vegas Club to cut from Fremont Street to the Cal/MSS. And I certainly won't play there, even though they have 9/6 Jacks, which is my game of choice.
But now, I'm starting to give them a little credit for their business savvy. Maybe they felt they needed to wait for signs of a rebound. And they certainly got a good deal on the furnishings, so it could just be that they felt that now was the time to invest their money to get the best return.
Could it be that they know what they're doing? Nah - I don't want to give them that much credit. But I think that the next time I'm in town, I might go on my own dime and give them a fair amount of play to see if I get any offers for when they reopen. It's worth a shot.
