Plaza

We were in Vegas begiining of Dec. we went downtown and went in the Plaza, the place was almost empty. Is was all sectioned off with drywall and there was only a few machines. All restaurants were closed as well as the promotions booth. The sign said any questions go to the Veas Club down the street. Anyone know anything about this?
We were in Las vegas in Oct/Nov and the Plaza and the Vegas club were almost empty then. The sorry thing wass they were not blocked off nor were the restaurants closed. Really the Plaza has some possibilites with some extensive work in both the casino as well as the rooms. The Vegas Club just needs a few people to dig the hole and push it in.
My sentiments about both places, exactly.
They are remodeling the rooms at the Plaza, they are tied in with the Las Vegas Club and you can stay there in place of the Plaza as they remodel. They also moved their Bingo Room to the LVC.

There's been a lot of coverage of Plaza's recent changes in the Las Vegas Advisor. Here's one paragraph from October's issue:

The PLAZA is effectively closing. It will shut down all of its hotel rooms in early November for renovations anticipated to take a year to complete (though a $20 million loan needed to finance the refurbishing has not been secured). Most of the casino will also be closed for remodeling (only slots will operate), but the Rat Pack Is Back show, the food court, and Firefly restaurant will remain open for business. The PLAZA is accepting reservations through Nov. 4, with $29 rates for its final week; the casino will “minimize” its operations starting November 11.
one news item i remember was the plaza's purchase of all the ?echelon or fontainbleu? furnishings at cents on the dollar. therefore suggesting in the best of all worlds that the reopened plaza will have more than good paint, but beds, furniture, et al, & improved over the last several years of decline. Good luck!
Here's the good news: The renovation really is happening and they say it is ahead of schedule at the Plaza. I am a local and I can actually win at the Plaza or the Las Vegas Club. I love TINOCOS at the Las Vegas Club. Eat there, you'll be shocked. Also, they comp very well for dinners if you have any kind of play at all in the casino. Love those places, that's real Vegas to me.
Thanks for the info, brieat, and welcome to the boards!

Good to hear that things are really moving ahead at the Plaza; I'll be there at the end of February (have rooms at the LV Club) and will post then as well. It's a shame what's happened with the Plaza over the years, you can still see the '70's luxury amidst all the squalor.

Good to know about Tinoco's as well, I've always wondered about that place, and they do have a nice menu. Anyone else have any experience with Tinoco's?
I, for one, used to enjoy staying at the Vegas Club. No, the rooms were nothing to write home about, but room comps were ridiculously easy, I liked both the Upper Deck and the Great Moments Room, and I just liked the place. And I used to enjoy playing blackjack at the Plaza, especially when they had the double deck game with the dealer standing on soft 17.

Then like lots of people, I grew dismayed when the current owners of both places let them go in the tank. Like a lot of people, I figured they were going to turn them into condos until that bubble burst.

I won't even walk through the Vegas Club to cut from Fremont Street to the Cal/MSS. And I certainly won't play there, even though they have 9/6 Jacks, which is my game of choice.

But now, I'm starting to give them a little credit for their business savvy. Maybe they felt they needed to wait for signs of a rebound. And they certainly got a good deal on the furnishings, so it could just be that they felt that now was the time to invest their money to get the best return.

Could it be that they know what they're doing? Nah - I don't want to give them that much credit. But I think that the next time I'm in town, I might go on my own dime and give them a fair amount of play to see if I get any offers for when they reopen. It's worth a shot.
I was in the Plaza last week and counted a total of 4 other patrons. Keep in mind that the Fitz, 4Q and GN were pumping. Hell even the Golden Gate had a bigger pulse. I hope they get the "reno" done quickly as it might never recover.
