Which hotel?
I'm looking at this from a hotel viewpoint NOT in a video poker paytable type of way. One night, comped room, no resort fee, deep soaking tub or jacuzzi tub, happy hour pricing or diamond lounge binge drinking, cool looking Japanese restaurant, one night on the strip or one night in outer lying area closer to friends who live in Vegas.
I've been thinking about adding a night to an upcoming trip and lo and behold received an email from Red Rock offering comped rooms on selected days during May, June and July. I've stayed at RR once at the end of March 2011, lost and haven't stepped foot in the place since. I recently gave GVR an hour or so of play on my way in and out of town. I love, repeat LOVE the hotel at RR and the casino hates me. A friend posted a trip report with photos of good wins shortly after I stayed there. I recognized many of the machines and said, played that, lost; played that, lost; played that one too and lost. You get the picture. I've played the optimal pay VP machines, shortest pay machines and everything in between and have never had luck at RR. Occasionally, I've won playing at GVR.
The first time I got aces w/kicker was at Caesars 4 summers ago and occasionally have luck playing slots or VP there. While surfing my offers the other night, I clicked on one for Caesars. Before when I checked, only a Forum Tower room showed comped. This time, Palace Tower, room with jetted tub, came up comped. So I booked it. I have neither a deep soaking tub nor jetted tub at home - a luxury I enjoy using in hotel rooms.
I got a smoking deal at Palms for the other nights of my trip and will be using the travelzoo voucher at Palms Place Spa for my birthday get-a-way. So, spa facilities are not part of the decision making process. If they were, Qua Spa would win hands down. While at Palms, I have plans to go to the strip one night.
I'm leaning toward RR because I like the hotel, might be less crowded mid week, and will probably be a long time until they offer me comped rooms again and I won't be as tempted to go on tilt or be concerned about a daily average. Going forward, I know I'll have an easier time getting a comped Palace or Augustus Tower room at Caesars. BUT, SOAKING IN THE JETTED TUB beats soaking in a deep soaking tub.
Evaluating hotel vs hotel, which would you stay at?
Oh yeah, I live in Phoenix and can see red rock formations, hike in the desert anytime. Being close to Red Rock Canyon isn't important.
