We were there also in those days. When I moved the US in 2009 we made Rio our home resort. Great memories. Including the buffet (many times).
We are staying at Rio again in June. One week. Two rooms. Masquerade tower. $600 all in for both rooms. Best deal in Vegas.
The deposit is capped at $500. I had two deposits held up. I made a big deal out of it. They were nice enough to apologize and assign me a client experience manager for future trips.
I had to put up $1100 for an eleven-night stay; then it took nine days (seven business days) to get that deposit back. I complained long and loud to them about that (after fighting with Rio Rita and being on hold for half an hour) before my next stay, and they capped my deposit at $250 for five nights.
I think that they also noticed that during my previous long stay, I hadn't tapped into that deposit once. I never ate there, they of the $26 hamburger and $41 bowl of Korean noodles.
The Rio is going to, for the foreseeable future at least, be a minimal-service do-it-yourself bargain destination. Nothing wrong with that; it's a market niche that used to be filled but hasn't been in the last several years, except downtown.
