Course conditions

Been out of town for a while since Vegas, so here is a rundown of my week of golf in vegas.

5/2 Wolf Creek - $200 - score 110 - grade A-
Awesome course, fantastic visual experience, just stunning, we played it at 6000 yds. A great round of golf, very playable if you choose the right tees.
Overall the course was in real good shape, great weather, the only complaint was the greens. They were aerated the week before and were still pretty bumpy.
For paying top dollar at $200, that was our only complaint, the greens fees should have been slightly less, but overall a great day on a great course.
The worst part for me was that it was the first time that i picked up and swung my clubs for the year. For anybody that has seen the course you know you can't spray the ball around
and must be able to hit some pretty accurate shots. I left lots of good Callaways in the canyons, once i hit the ball straighter i played pretty much played bogey golf.

5/3 Wildhorse - $59 - 91 - C
Crowded, dry, but a good play. My buddy wanted to play here, it was close and we could play early, as he had plans for the afternoon. So we played and had a nice relaxing round,
the course has a couple of nice holes, but after Wolf Creek it was kinda plain. Greens were very fast and hard, made it difficult to fly balls on the greens, but they were true for putting.
Same can be said of the fairways, if you were in the short grass, you got lots of roll.
The one comment that Ken made in his book about being in a war zone was pretty accurate, we had more than our share of errant shots flaying at us. It just reminded us of the county courses back
in Milwaukee, lots of fairways side by side. Played the entire round with 1 ball, a huge plus after Monday.

5/4 Boulder Creek - $40 - 88 - B-
I have played this course twice before, and was a tad disappointed. The fairways were a little dry and rough. Also they are running a special with Boulder city right now and that has increased
the number of rounds and amount of golfers on the course. The course is a great track, lots of challenging holes, lots of visually appealing holes. the greens were in great shape, fast and true.
Our main problem was with the staff, we showed up 45 minutes early to relax and hit some balls. Because they where so crowded and we only had a 2some, they were pushing us out to the tees the second we
checked in. We where literarily pushed out to the tees while trying to spend a couple of bucks in the clubhouse. Once out on the course and calmed down, we had a great time. Played with a couple local fellows,
friendly guys, they golfed about the same as us, so it made it fun. They said the same thing, that with so many more golfers on the course now, it was getting a tad beat up. Overall still a fun play, and will play next
time I'm in town, and I would still recommend it to anyone.

5/5 Laughlin Ranch - $75 - 86 - B+
Another fun track, very good course layout, lots of awesome scenery. The course was in pretty decent shape, a few dry spots in the fairways, the greens where smooth and true. Between the mountains and river views
every hole had a Kodak moment somewhere on it. Lots of elevation changes, water in just the right spots, some stunning locations of the greens. It was a great place to play, plus other than the 2 holes I was distracted
by call from work, i could've put up a better score. (a 7 & 8 handling phone calls for 20 minutes) The course offered lots of risk/reward type shots, which makes it fun to take the gamble once in a while.
I don't know what else to say, I would love play it again and recommend it to anyone willing to drive down from Vegas or staying in Laughlin.

5/6 Mountain Falls - $45 - 90 - B+
Another great course, very nice layout, kinda a tale of 2 nines. The original(back nine) more lush, some water , elevation changes, challenging holes. The front nine a little flatter not as forgiving off the fairways. It is tough to
picture a desert and resort course all in one, but this could be it. The green and fairways were both in excellent shape. As with all the courses played it is just hard to imagine something this lush and green in the middle of the
desert. The only complaint was the sand traps, the sand was baked to a
hard crusty surface which made it hard to hit a decent shot out of it. So for that being the only problem the only thing we could think of that would improve the experience would be getting a couple of girls from the Chicken
ranch to caddy. This course by far had some of the thickest grass of all the courses we played this week. Another course with lots of photo opps on it, incredible mountain views everywhere. I do a lot of chip and running and
the thick grass around the green here caused a lot of balls to check up and stop short. Hard to find anything bad to say about the course, the staff was great, friendly and the cart girl did actually have a microwave on the
back of her cart to warm sandwiches.

Well that kind of wraps up my week of golf. After Wolf Creek I only lost 3 balls the rest of the week. Whohoo, I pretty pleased with that. Next trip we plan on hitting Piaute, more Mesquite courses and possible St. George.
All in all 4 courses I'd play again in a heart beat. Besides the great courses, the weather was perfect, between 85-93 every day, with slight wind and scattered clouds. For anyone interested we had some pretty good meals
every day also: Austin's, Stripsteak, Spago, the Flame, Noodle house, Lucille's rib shack. not a bad dinner amongst them.

If anyone would like to know anything else, leave a message and I'll do my best to answer.
thanks for reading the babbling

First, I'd like to thank you for doing a "Golf Trip Report." I'd love to see more of these. In addition to the entertainment value, it keeps members apprised of conditioning on various courses.

I'll comment on two of the courses. I'm sorry to hear about Boulder Creek, but if they're running a special, it's probably packed and needs additional maintenance. Good courses and great clubhouse. You shouldn't have been rushed though.

Wildhorse and conditioning aren't always used in the same sentence positively. It seems that no matter who owns it (good or bad), conditioning always comes and goes. After I'd played there about 8-10 times and seen everything from very good to walking off the course bad, I started wondering about the land it sits on and soil condition. Back in the 90s, it was considered a resort quality course and charged as much as the Legacy. It still could be in terrible shape or near pristine. At least now they charge more reasonably as a muni.

Thanx again for the report and I'm glad you had a great golf trip.

Good Luck!

Thank you for the report! I was looking for a course in Laughlin during my October trip and you pretty much made up my mind with your Laughlin Ranch report!
jphelan, you will not be disappointed, great course and wonderful staff.
lots of old mining stuff scattered along the course.
