Report from Black Mountain and Legacy

I am just back from another great trip and wanted to chime in with a few details from the links.

The short and sweet summary: Black Mountain is a great play for $25. Legacy is a fun course that is really green.

A friend and I have played Black Mountain at least once a trip for probably the last seven or eight years. We had a twilight tee time booked this year for $50ish dollars. Black Mountain sent out e-coupons a week or two before the trip offering a round for $25. They accepted the coupons and we were able to get out on the course an hour or so before our original tee time.

We played the Founders 9 (still my favorite) and the Desert 9. The Horizon was closed for repairs. I might be mixing up the second 9 we played and the one closed for repairs but we definitely started off on the Founders.

Black Mountain is still Black Mountain, and I mean that in a good way. It's a solid municipal course for a good price. It's not in resort condition, but that doesn't really matter to myself and my buddy. It is a desert after all. We get to Black Mountain fresh from the airport and just want a friendly, comfortable place to tee it up. We had the place pretty much to ourselves and finished our 18 in 3-1/2 hours.

You can definitely spend a little bit more money and play a better course but Black Mountain is pretty sweet for $25.

We also ventured out to Legacy and enjoyed a fun 18 for $99 a guy. I always love driving into the Green Valley area because everything is so, well, green! The course was really nicely maintained, especially the greens.

This is the second time we've played Legacy and the second time we've been paired with interesting and friendly local players. This time it was a retired gentleman who spends part of the year in town and plays poker just about every day. His playing partner was a nice older women who took just a huge rip at the ball and had the length to prove it. She was a longer hitter than probably 75 percent of the men or women with whom I have played.

There are plenty of houses alongside the fairways at Legacy, but I dig their architectural style and enjoy looking at them. Pace of play was pretty slow here and we finished in about 5 hours.

Service at both places was great. It's always a joy to tee it up in Las Vegas in the middle of winter! Thanks to Ken V and everyone else for sharing their info.
I would agree that Blk Mtns at $25 is a good value.hw only problem is that is not a normal rate there unless things have changed a lot. I've always enjoyed the place and like the clubhouse, but if I had to pay nonresident rate, I'd never play there.

The Legacy is one that I also like. Houses do come into play a lot though, so it's best to keep that tee ball straight. Service has always been good and I love sitting at the bar after a round and watching players at the range and first tee. One unique factor about the Legacy is that it is the only course that I have ever played while it was snowing! I swear to God.

Good Luck!

That's funny, I got an e-mail today from golf now offering a $29 round at Black Mountain. If I weren't over 1500 miles away, I would likely take them up on it.

Legacy is a decent course, and I've always found the staff to be accomodating and friendly. But the brutal pace there keeps me from going back regularly. Last time I played there it took over 5 hours to play 17 holes - I skipped the final hole because I was afraid I would miss my flight. And that was on a 110 degree, somewhat humid (well, for Vegas anyway) day.

I've played a few rounds in snow, but certainly not in Vegas.
