Basketball Basic Coaching Strategy For Losing

Basketball Basic Coaching Strategy For Losing 1. When you have the lead, play prevent Offense. Run clock down to 12 on the 35 second clock, totally disrupting your offense that WAS in sync. Then settle for ugly 3 point shots chocked up from the parking lot. I see this in literally EVERY game. Amazing to me. Until the game clock goes under 1:00, IGNORE IT. Just play an optimal game. The clock is not your enemy, the other team is. Fla's loss to Butler was perhaps the most egregious example, but it happens over and over and over.... 2. Blow the 2 for 1 at the end of the half/quarter so badly it looks like you are losing on purpose. A) Explain to your players that with :50-1:00 to play they need to get a shot up by :45......... B) AMAZINGLY teams with :50 or so left actually run the clock down to :24 (see item 1 above) and then play to lose forcing up a shot as the shot clock expires.....what they are gaining by running clock is beyond me, especially in tied games. C) UNDERSTAND that at the end of the 1st half the game clock runs after a basket the 35 clock doesn't. When the other guys make a shot with :40-:45 EXPLAIN TO TAKE YOUR TIME inbounding the ball.........NOT EXACTLY ROCKET SCIENCE.
Couldn't agree more with #1 frustrating to watch over and over again come tourney time.
Yet no announcer seems aware of how stupid it is Further, if any team with a lead has the audacity to shoot early in a shot clock the talking heads go NUTS ripping on him.
Especially annoying if they have the bonus and continue to dribble out the shot clock instead of going inside for easy hoops or free throws. One more pet peeve regarding TV coverage. Why show amount of time outs remaining on the ongoing score and time - I'd much rather see amount of team fouls per half which have a far greater affect on the outcome.

Because networks have sports execs, not basketball execs, and the highest rated sport (football) shows number of time outs left.
How in the world does the summary not show possession arrow also? MUCH more important than timeouts, and often more important than fouls.........
While we're on it, I can't stand listening to how great every coach is. For every coach that they say is great, they should be required to say that some other coach sucks, or is at least below average.
I would love to a see some kind of points per possession breakdown on these dribble out possessions. Something like up "x' amount. y time left in game, shot taken under a certain amount on the shot clock. The other strategy which isn't near as bad, but the announcers always love to call for is the "They don't need a 3 here, just a quick 2". Yes, a quick 2 and a parlay of minor miracles.
