Basketball: They need to change the foul rules

Basketball: They need to change the foul rules Fouls suck. They disrupt the game, slow it down, and ruin the flow of the game. The problem is not so much teams foul too much, the problem is that the penatly for fouling (as long as you don't do it 80 feet from your basket with :01 left) is so small. The result is that ANY player driving in the line, you should CHOP at the ball.......he is going to get 1.3ish point from the possession in position in the paint, so hacking him changes little, and you COULD steal the ball. My suggestion during all but the last minute: All fouls when playing D result in a free throw given, AND the team retaining the ball. The shot clock is NOT reset. I recognize the traditionalists would never allow this, but this would REALLY improve the game.
I think every basket should be graded by a panel of 3 judges, based on difficulty, distance, and style to award 1-5 points...(your idea with the fouls would work fine). And the last judge each time, of course is the Russian Judge...
i agree with fez.. especially in college basketball, EVERY foul in the last 2 minutes is INTENTIONAL, so they should award foul shots AND possession.... and what about giving them 3 shots instead of 2, if the team that is behind can hit a 3 pt shot then foul and give up 2 pts, then they can can make up 1 pt every possession, so they shud give at least 3 foul shots...... eithe way im sick of the fouls at the end of games....
I may be in the minority but don't see the problem w/ it. What there needs to be is greater education to coaches as to when to foul. Variables include... time left in game margin of deficit opponent FT% Your own 3pt FG% and 2pt FG% Interesting study woudl be what % of teams who decide to foul at the end of a game actually come back and win? As for other fouls not @ the end of game, that's why there is the "penalty". If you want to raise the # of fouls before 1&1 or 2, fine, but the team who is fouling knows the rules. To decrease FT shot, you can lower fouls before ejection to 5 and increase # of fouls before penalty.

The huge PROBLEM is the penalty for a foul vs. any other sport! In football a 5 year penalty big, 15 yards bigger, P.O when the other team is about to score a TD really IS a TD (1st and goal on the 1). Ok, that's TOO big a penalty but you get the id...... In hockey a power play is a big deal....... In soccer, a corner kick a pretty big deal, a penalty kick similar to P.O in the end zone in some ways! In Basketball, any 60% FT shooter should be maimed as soon as he gets the ball in the Paint low.......STUPID!!!

Hockey power play is not rewarding a direct shot on goal, a la a NBA free throw or a penalty kick in soccer... Only thing comparable is a penalty shot for NHL. Plus, huge difference is that in soccer/hockey, how many goals scored a game avg? Hardly any. Thus, the PK or PS or P.O. in the end zone for 1st & goal on the 1 are: Rarely seen and are a HUGE deal They used to not call as many fouls in the NBA. Due to desire for increased scoring, they changed the rules. Thus, more fouls and FT. Same thing is happening in NFL w/ the pass interference penalties but that wasn't enough so they add all the extremely judgmental 15 yrd personal fouls for roughing the passer or hit to defenselessness receiver. It's all to increase scoring... And you can't just maim the player in the post because a) you don't have enough fouls to do that b) if you stick the goons in there to foul their 60% shooter in the post, its a huge disadvantage for your team on offense as well as in defensive rotations, because that 60% won't get the ball each possession. Your logic is not making sense here...
My posts makes 100% sense, And it explains why we deal with 50 fouls a night. Hacking is a solid strategy.....the foul penalty is like a $10 speeding ticket. Is isn't enough to deter a defensive player from hack hack hack. Yes, if you are a star, don't do it due to foul trouble. But a Big Baby guy worth almost nothing, should just go for the steal everyone time, miss it, HACK!! Imagine if in the NFL P.I was 5 yards........THERE WOULD BE ALOT MORE FOULS IN THE NFL THEN........AND A SHITTY GAME LIKE THIS NBA
Coaches even admit this - Doc Rivers quote this week on whether a return by Shaq will help Celtics in this series vs. Heat: "He gives us 6 more fouls to use against them"

They changed the rules to stop or discourage that. It sounds like you are arguing why they should foul more, yet are complaining that there are too many fouls?? I agree, the PI spot foul is huge in the NFL. But NBA game totally different... teams flying up and down the court, literally 10x more possessions in the NBA each game despite the game being a full quarter shorter than the NFL game. No way to make it the same. Not saying I love the NBA fouls at the end of games. Too many coaches are oblivious to the fact of whether it will/could actually help them win or not... They think if they don't tell their players to foul, the announcers/fans will call them out. So its become a routine part of the game, instead of something that you could situationaly use to your advantage given the right time/deficit/FT%... Like I said, the simple way to fix it is lower the # of fouls before ejection, and make the # of fouls higher prior to shooting FT. That's all u need to do... But they don't do it, because they want their stars playing more (& not fouling out) and they want higher scoring games.
& of course playoffs are different too... "playoff foul", no easy layups, make them "earn it" throughout the game... it's all done because thats "expected", no coaches have studied to see if it makes sense, they are just sheep...
