I agree
So many games look like fixes. There is so much poorly-played, poorly executed basketball. A lot of times you can't blame the coach, especially a first year coach who inhereted all the players like (the well-named) USC coach Kevin O'Neill. He's actually a good x's and o's guy who was well respected in the NBA for his work as an assistant. But these aren't his kids, he has a thin roster, and when these kids don't listen to him there's only so much he can do.
And even if you have your own players, if you're a college coach you can't bench every kid who does something stupid and put inferior talent out there. You just can't. The boosters will kill you for sacrificing games for the longer term greater good. And there's less job security than ever before in the revenue sports in college.
Additionally, these kids have spent a hell of a lot more time playing AAU ball than they have in a structured environment, which does nothing to provide them with the fundamentals of basketball or basic game strategy. It simply is not ingrained in them. High level high school kids are pretty coddled and don't really have to learn to play smart. That's why you often see more intelligent play in the Missouri Valley, Horizon, etc. than you do in the major majors.
There's only so much these coaches can do. If you bet college basketball you're at the mercy of a lot of poorly played, unintelligent basketball. And that won't be changing any time soon.
So you can get yourself all worked up with phantom fixes or you can just realize that you'll have both wins and losses that are completely undeserved and random and keep your head on straight. Your call.
with everything Kevin O'Neill (RealWorldSports not the coach) said and would add...besides being undisciplined, some of these kids ain't the brightest light in the chandelier!
